 I am installing new carpet and the sewn vinyl binding around The shifter was really bothering me.  I looked at the original with it’s vulcanized insert and decided to try swapping it over.  I was able to pull the old one of without too much trouble so I recut the hole the shaved the fibers off the backing leaving a little longer fiber at the margin.  I used some old vinyl top contact cement that had thickened up considerably for the glue being careful to really work it into the fibers on the margins.  Now I just have to sit here and roll it down every few minutes until the glue dries.

I am looking to do the same thing you did with the carpet grommet. I originally had one in my car and for the life of me I cannot find it. I have been searching for years to try to find a used one and no luck. Any chance you can provide some dimensions of the profile of the gasket? Since no one makes these, I figured I would make a mold and cast my own.

The rubber is 1/2” Wide and follows the outline of the shifter. Profile should be visible in the photo.  I have a couple idea to replicate it.  I would most likely make a form out of UHMW polyethylene and use windshield urethane for the rubber. I am keeping some carpet scraps to play with if I get time.  I think the hardest part would be making a mold realistic enough.  As you can see from the photo is is a very wavy and uneven grommet almost like someone molded it by hand out of plaster in the manor of an old plaster molding the pulled a mold off of the plaster master.  If you were to machine a mold it would be too nice and even and would be a dead giveaway that it was a reproduction.

This was also my long quest. I would be very interested in re-creation of this carpet finish for automatic.

There is no underside and there is no extra lip at the shifter.  It just drops off the rise.

If I get around to making a mold I thought adding the underside would help compress the upper (visible) portion over the carpet.
