Checking oil pump for wear
« on: August 10, 2020, 11:19:00 »
I purchased what was described as a NOS oil pump. Now that I have received it. I am questioning if it is new or worn out. Should There be any back and forth play in the gears? I demonstrate what I am talking about in this video.

There are specifications in the workshop manual (BBB).
See attached. One can use blade or pin feeler gauges, micrometer etc in order to evaluate status of a used engine oil pump.

The question is: Is backlash normal for a new pump?

Yes, you would need a little bit to keep it from binding. Radial play or backlash is in the .002 - .003" range so it's not very much.

Thank you Hans and Dan for the information. It looks like the pump is a keeper.
