Transmission gear ratios
« on: March 29, 2005, 16:53:29 »
I've seen two different sets of gear ratios for a 230SL transmission:

   1.00  1.53  2.28  4.42
   1.00  1.40  2.23  4.05

I believe the first set was used in the older cars.  Does anyone know when the change was made?  I'm pretty sure my my Euro 230SL, built in February 1965, has the first set.

My manual (book) matches the first set of numbers. A bit different for my automatic. The second set appears to match the 230S (not SL).

According to the Mercedes-Benz History CD the
4.42 - 2.28 - 1.53 - 1.00 transmission was installed until October 65, and the
4.05 - 2.23 - 1.40 - 1.00 transmission as of November 65.
Probable changeover chassis no. 230SL ....013876

Thanks for the answer, Klaus.  Your switchover date is consistent with the ratios in my car.
