Distributor advance only 20 dgr. at 3000 rpm
« on: September 16, 2020, 20:20:29 »
Hello,

My M130 engine (injection) has a Bosch 0231 116 051 JFUR 6 distributor with vacuum retard.

The engine runs relatively OK, but I hear some minor "puffing" when I realise the throttle. It just does not feel 100%...
I suspect the ignition...
At idle I have 3 dgr. ATDC (vacuum attached), at 1500 rpm around 15 dgr. BTDC, but at 3000 rpm I only have 20 dgr. BTDC.
I think this should be about 30 dgr.

I looked at the centrifugal weights and the little springs holding them, but that looks OK.
I noticed that the rotor only turns 10 dgr. when the centrifugal weights are in their maximum position.

Any suggestions? Should I just regulate the ignition at 30 dgr at 3000 rpm and not worry about idle?

Thanks a lot!

There is a lot of I do regarding timing on this website. Do a search on “051 timing”

The 051 distributor has a 10 degree vacuum advance and a 20 degree mechanical advance for a total of 30 degrees.

This forums wisdom suggests setting the the timing to 38 degrees @3000 rpm and let the idle find its own place. This will usually be 8 degrees BTDC.

Hello,

I have set the timing at approx. 35 dgr at 3000 rpm.

BIG improvement!!

Thanks a lot!

Personally I would want to restore the distributor (or associated parts) to correct function and have the timing be in line with the correct spec.

Thanks for your comment!

I disassembled the distributor, checked it and cleaned it.
I will put my electronic ignition FAST XR-700 back and see how it runs!
