Softtop L shaped brackets

Hi Guys,

One more question on the softtop please. I canot figure out what the funciton is of these L shaped brackest on each of the mean softtop hinges. I do understand that they must be used to unlock a blocked softtop when it ihas been put up incorrectly... I have read all that info here. But what do these brackest do in the first place? They move only a cm or so and they don't seem to do anyhting when the ST is unfolded correctly.
