Upper sump case.

I had quite the surprise today, I pulled the upper sump case and the case pretty much fell into my hands without any appreciable pressure applied to it. There was no gasket or sealent between the block and case. Another thing was that there were no baffles inside the case. Has anyone else run into this and is it supposed to be that way? When I reassemble the case should I apply make a gasket sealent?

Not sure if the factory used any sealant between the block and the upper case. Of course the parts then were brand new and machined perfectly flat. I think what you want is a thin sealant and two come to my mind. Permatex #2 and #3. #3 (also called Aviation) is thinner and is good for metal to metal surfaces. In either case, use a thin coat.

I am not a big RTV silicone fan for this application.

No silicone anywhere where it can make its way into the oil sump.

I use Permatex Gray RTV for jobs like that. It will harden and not leak. Softer types of silicone can and will squeeze out with plugged oil pump screens a small possibility.

Weasel? Tried that once. Stunk the place up so bad no one would come to work for a whole week.

I use either Yamabond or Toyota FIPG (formed in place gasket).  Both are silicone based but I have never had a problem with it migrating anywhere.  I am careful about how I apply it and after working on countless Asian cars that didn't leak a drop after hundreds of thousands of miles I am sold.
