Cigarette lighter socket size.
« on: December 09, 2020, 03:15:50 »
I purchased a cigarette lighter for my 280sl 1970 from ebay. I tried to insert it andit was slightly too big. I have 1969 280sl and it fits perfectly. So is it possible there are different sizes of sockets? What years are smaller and larger?

I believe all the sockets should be the same size.

Ok i figured out whats wrong. The 1970 has part of the old cigarette lighter body still in the socket and the knob part was removed.

The only accessory/cigarette lighter plug that is different from the worldwide standard I have found at some BMWs, including all of their motorcycles.

I recall a post by Tom Sargeant (Tom) some time back indicating that he found the socket size was slightly large for modern plug-in devices. He indicated that using a soft foam earplug as a cushion would render these devices usable  in our cars. I found this to be the case with my car when I used a plug in GPS traveling to PUB-Virginia.

I believe the socket is very slightly larger than the modern standard size.

In my quest to find the correct size usb charger, I found that all three of my German cars have the larger size cigarette lighter socket. I tried using a common usb charger but it is too loose. I also tried different gimmicks to make the slimmer charger stay put,, put not happy.. Anyone had luck finding the correct size usb charger?

Add one or more thin strips of electrical tape on the side of the plug opposite the spring and the connection will firm up quite nicely.

FYI.  I did some recent research on this for my 1965 230 SL.  There are two different cigar lighters for the 113s with 1967 being a breakpoint.  Can't speak to the dimensions but pictures of the socket are different.  I order the early model replacement from SLS in Germany.  It was a special order since they had no inventory on hand.

I am making this replacement since my original doesn't function reliably and I have my Becker radio out for a restoration so seemed like a good opportunity.

Early has small knob.  Late has big knob.  The socket itself is the same.
