Help me to identify the genuine engine block
« on: December 14, 2020, 08:54:59 »
Hello

I'm in negociating a so called genuine 250SL engine block
Apperently it has been proceeded to a replacement somewhere in its life as the original numbers are grinded.

Nevertheless I'm puzzled still to determine the authenticty of this engine as I never seen a casted "250" on any of the original W113 head, as it could be seen on the picture.

Thanks for your kind help and advices

Thanks for your reply
What do you think about the grinded numbers ?

How about reliability
It seems those engine suffered from a poor reputation compared to 230 or 280 engines

Can you say something ?

Hi,
you still can see some remains of the original numbers ("129"). The new plate shows a M129.III (129.982) engine (see att. data sheet).
There is a long discussion about the 250SL: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=5816.msg36307 .

This is a factory replacement engine that came without a number. Buyer to stamp in their own engine number. Perhaps the seller, or at least a previous owner, had thought of stamping in a different number from before. Either way, the condition of the engine is more important. If you buy it, you can stamp in your original engine number. But then you may want to also remove the little plate that identifies the engine as a replacement one.

The '250" is cast in the head and really does not have that much to do with the originality of the engine block

After some researches I came to the same conclusion but as I'm a newbie I wanted some confirmation.
Anyway thanks for your inputs. I'm free now to decide weither I'll go for it or not.
