This morning, while closing the driver side door, the window went from intact to a thousand pieces in about 0,5 seconds. I tried my best German curse words, invented a few new ones, but, sadly, all this didn't bring the window back.

Question: Is there a recommended procedure for getting all the glass debris out of the door? Anything I need to pay special attention to?
I didn't have the time to take off the door cover so I can't really tell what's going on inside. What other parts (other than the glass) do I have to order?

A first quick check told me there are two window versions: clear glass and somewhat tinted. I would venture a guess that the remaining window is not tinted - but I can't really tell, for lack of experience. Is there a way to tell, maybe the Sekurit code at the top of the window?

I don't think the tinted glass was supplied on 230sl's (not sure on this though), so I reckon if yours was original glass then it's probably clear. My clear drivers door glass says "Sekurit D-02 M2/AS2". It's a 1965 US 230sl.

The glass codes on my 2 hardtops are "Sekurit-F D51 M51/AS2 (tinted version) and Sekurit T-1 D89 M89/AS2 (clear version). The tint is a very light shade of green, whereas the clear is absolutely clear.

You shouldn't need any additional parts to fit the window as the new glass will have the window guides attached - at least the NOS ones I've seen do. Perhaps you should ask your supplier just to make sure of that. The felt guides should be replaced if they're degraded.

There is plenty of room to get a vacuum cleaner in the door once you have the door panel off. Why do you think it broke?? Maybe there's a misalignment that allowed it to touch the body when you closed the window? Or was the window rolled all the way down when it broke? In that case perhaps the window dropped out of the guides.

When up, the window had been kind of wobbly. I think one of the guides was bad. Closing the door with the window up did it - the window was moving inside the door and hit it. Well, I will have to open the panel anyway. I just hope I can tell a bad guide from a good one...

I have a 1966 230SL with clear side glass and a 1967 230SL with tinted
original side glass.

Juergen,
I was told glass becomes brittle with age and will break for no particular reason.Also if you do something silly like someone here I know did!!
If the glass was tinted, the fragments will have a greenish color as opposed to being clear.
You can vacuum all the bits you see, but some will be coming out of obscure places years from now.
New glass comes with the bottom guides bonded to it. You will still need to get the plastic bits that run on the channels.
I would treat this job as a project and clean out the channels, replace the plastic runners and any other worn parts including the whiskers.

Mmmmm I reckon its time to stick that front jaw guide back on the glass and stop using the glass as a handle to swing the door closed !!

As an aside: I would never use the glass as a handle to swing the door shut - that sounds like a hideous crime to me...

I am currently trying to take off the panel. The interior lock lever plate (round, about 1 - 1.5 cm thick) is giving me trouble. After taking out the screw, it still holds fast to the panel to the point where I want to use a crowbar.

Is there a trick?

Yes, Juergen,
The round lock-plate is held by 2 screws which are covered by 2 squarish (about 1 cm) chrome covers.
You can slide them out with a small flat screw driver.

Thanks again. Too bad I shattered the window that morning - otherwise I would have had the two sunny days' worth of driving needed to swap the fuel sender and see how it goes...

Naj et al., those two chrome cover plates: were they eliminated later on? (Douglas--you seem like the expert on undocumented running changes--want to weigh in?) I don't have the chrome plates in mine (67), and I've never seen them before. But the grooves they slide into are there, and I've always wondered about the purpose of the grooves.

aha! Now I know why I didn't see the second screw - looks like I have one of these sliding covers, the other is awol. Made me believe there is only one, namely the one that was visible. Excellent.

The reason I wasn't in Essen: I was in Holland at the time. My girl lives there (by the way, my Pagoda lived there too - from 1964 till 1985, when it was brought to Houston, TX. It was never converted to US specs, even the manual was German!)

Anyway, next time I will make Essen a top priority on my list. Maybe I will even bring the two Dutch girls...

My VIN is 11304210019671. And yes, it was originally a 230, since rebuilt/rebadged as a 250. Maybe there were the little chrome slides originally. What struck me is that I've never seen them on any other Pagoda (or same-era MB for that matter). But maybe I just never noticed, or maybe they tend to disappear over the decades with door dis/re-assembly.

Maybe this should be a separate thread about the lock cover plates.
I don't have them on my 113043 22 000114, 250 sl either. I just checked and the grooves are there for them.
How does the little cover stay in place?
Funnily I have often thought how "UNFINISHED" those locks look with the little screws so visible.
Now I know why.
I just checked the 230 sl CD manual picture parts catalogue and the covers are shown as separate items.
I wonder if they are still available?
I don't have a parts list catalogue yet so do you have any idea of the part numbers?

These covers just push fit into the grooves.

The old part # was 30 180 723 0224. This was superseded to a 113 number but I can't remember how I came by it and where it is now. You may not want to know it anyway!!
The cost was around £30.00. :oops:

I think the little chrome tabs are available from Ray at SL Classics. I remember buying some not that long ago (although it was Star Quality back then...) Not as expensive as 30 (pounds euros or dollars) when I got them... All I remember is they didn't want to slide in as nice as old ones... I think I even filed them down a smidge.

Bob,

When I first bought my car, these covers were in poor shape. I bought a set of reproduction replacements from the old Star Quality; I don't remember the price, but they weren't very expensive (nothing like Naj's MBZ price!). I see that these repro pieces are still listed as available at SL Classics (www.SLClassics.com); their part number is 42-029.

The replacements I bought were chrome-plated brass. The slots in the lock body are pretty small, and the chrome plating on the new parts was so thick that I had to grind the edges down a bit to slide them in. They look great.

Also, an opinion: I'd be very surprised if there was ever a Mercedes car that used this style of lock that didn't leave the factory with these covers.

(Oops! I see that James and I posted the same info at the same time, but mine was more wordy!)

Ah, the pleasure of pelting each other with catalog numbers...

Niemoeller has the little slide-on things too. They are called D 72 378 and for 9,51 Euros one of them is yours.

Well, to wrap up the panel-taking-offing: I slid off the slide-on thing, sure enough there was a screw, and after that I was able to take off the panel.

Behind it: tons of glass debris, a window mechanism that calls for repair kits, cleaning and a major lube session, and no protective plastic sheet!!!

Looks like more work will have to go into it than planned - but that is usually the case with anything on that car. I am going to drive it with the panel off - of course, weather permitting.

Thanks for the follow up info.
I don't know how I will live without those little covers.
Tomorrow I will visit the local German car wrecker and see what I can find.
Then next week I will approach my MB parts guys and try to retreive the current part number and availability, and of course the price in Australia.
