Faded carpet in 280sl
« on: January 18, 2021, 22:49:49 »
Just curious,
I have brown carpet in a 280sl in great condition however in some areas the brown had faded into a green. Any advise as to whether it is better to die/spray it? Shame to have to replace it.

A friend and I redyed the blue carpet in his 250 SL. It was a royal pain to do, as you had to have hot (as in close to boiling water) to dissolve the dye, and then quickly spray it on the carpet. It has held up pretty well. He is now replacing his carpets as there were a lot of wear spots, the dye was a good interim solution for him. For carpet in good condition it would probably work well. I will check with him on the source.

The difficulty may be on finding the right dye. His carpet had faded mostly to gray/white. You will need to consider how the colors will interact to get back to the brown.

We did take all the carpet out of the car. The only item I am not sure we removed is the panel around the storage area.

The carpet in some areas (e.g.: tunnel) is glued. removing it requires utmost care. Otherwise you destroy the loops.

Here is the outfit for color dyes for the carpets. Best bet would be to make a direct contact and find out about the color options with the fading as you have described.

Good luck!

Let me make a plug for becoming a full member, best money you can spend for your Pagoda

In the technical manual, available only to full members, there is a list of the upholstery codes (from the data card) with the corresponding color carpet.
