hello Chris, I've got a 64 230SL (chassis 003548) that Bud's installed AC on about 7 yrs ago. They did a great job.
Since then I've logged almost 27K miles on the car and I can count
on one hand the number of times I've used the AC, but
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times I've cursed myself for having had it installed. If you have AC you'll find it's a hassle working on the alternator, tightening belts, changing the air filter, replacing water pump, fixing little coolant leaks behind that large adapter plate, or any other menial maintenance task where that compressor and/or evaporator hoses are sure to be in the way.
I use the hardtop throughout the winter months (AC not needed) and my soft-top is always down during the summer months (not feasible to use AC). Those
very few times I've used the AC was when I got caught in a rain shower (summer months) and had to stop and quickly raise the top. I used the AC to get the heat and humidity out of the car and believe me, it was
nice having air conditioning those few times...but was it worth it? in my opinion, nope. If I were 40yrs younger I'd probably feel different about it. For all those who disagree with me, sorry to rain on the parade..
