I did it again: this time a 1971 Volkswagen 411 Combi

My first Volkswagen - picked it up Friday locally in Long Beach. Had been sitting for a year or two. This is one of the last air-cooled flat 4 boxer engined VW's, with 1,700 cc and Bosch electronic fuel injection. The car was in California and Arizona all its life. Drove it around a bit yesterday and it's quite fun! 3-speed automatic. Parts are a bit hard to come by here in the US but it doesn't seem to need much. Will post photos later.

Very cool. Only for a brief period of time, were the 411/412s seen on the roads of my childhood in NY. Before long they rusted faster than you would believe, and I'd hazard a guess that there are few survivors; in fact I think Hemmings did a piece on them a while ago of lost cars of the 70s.  Speaking of lost cars, if you ever find a K70, pick that up too.

Thanks Michael. Yes for sure these disappeared for the most part, despite there having been around 110,000 sold in the US alone, twice as many Pagodas as ever made! I found a yard up here in the desert that has a bunch of these being parted out, so I should be fine with some of  the rusted areas on mine. Here it is as the French say so poetically "Dans son jus" (literally "in its  juice" meaning it needs some work):

Great little car. We had a squareback just like yours in the late 70's - same color even. It was just a little bigger than the other style and the few extra inches made a big difference. They also made a hatchback I think. If I remember its a Bosch D-jet set up. I also think it had a gasoline heater system. Watch for leaking fuel hoses to injectors! Ours unfortunately was wrecked when someone pulled out in front of my wife and she ran it into a ditch to avoid a collision.

I bought myself a 1978 -originally Californian-1303 Beetle Karman convertible with the 1.6 fuel injected engine from Holland.

I expect it to arrive to Cyprus in a container in mid April. I attach a picture...

@ Nicolas: Nice! Post photos when it arrives please.

@MikeSimon: The body is in good shape, it's the fenders and hood that have some rust/denting. I can repair that, but hope to score rustfree panels instead, make life a bit easier. Meanwhile this will be 'daily' transportation (insofar as I have that, working from home still) and as the panels can be removed, I can do one bit at a time.

All the while as I am still making progress on the Lancia Fulvia - it's about halfway done now, all new fenders, all rust addressed. Now doing
'the dirty work' removing all the old undercoating and dirt underneath and in the wheel wells. Then epoxy coating, followed by new undercoating. Then new brake and fuel lines. Once the underside is done, taking the body to bare metal, prime + single stage urethane paint which I will do myself (first time).

The Volkswagen will also get a new coat of paint - not decided yet whether to keep the current soft-yellow, or go for a sky blue.

The Spitfire is waiting patiently until the Lancia is done, I expect by July it will be its turn.

And, yes, I had to promise my wife that no more stray cars will be adopted until one finds a new home, so this will be it for a while.

That is, besides me helping my son with the upgrades/repaint on his new-to-him '73 Datsun 240Z, which is running really strong.

So our driveway and garage are now filled with seventies cars, which makes the '90 Bronco II look a bit too modern, haha (am now in the middle of replacing its cylinder heads with new ones - it was losing coolant that was ending up under the valve covers, we figure it's the heads, fingers crossed. Two brand new heads with valves installed, $500).

Cees: My comment wasn't about replacing the 411 body with another 411. It was a tongue-in-cheek about getting a 914 body 8) :o ;D

Ah, ok - well we already have our share of two-seaters so a stationwagon was a welcome addition. As soon as I've addressed the brakes and wheel bearings, will be off for a long trip to Phoenix, AZ to pick up a hood, roof rack, bumper, rear fender, and so on. I discovered today that the engine was fully rebuilt back in 2015 and it likely covered few miles since then, so my feeling about the engine being so strong was on the mark. Now that it's covered a few miles with fresh gas, it starts up at the flick of the switch. Of course it's not wise to go on a long trip right away, but why not.

I've been very busy with the VW. Ended up finding a treasure trove of spare parts, new and used, in someone's back yard in North Hollywood. Cliff sold me a new old stock rear fender, a rust-free hood, an ignition vacuum can for the Bosch distributor (the old one leaked and did not do anything anymore) and some good rear lights. That was a Saturday very well spent and a lot of fun spending the day with someone who is totally into VW 411's.

I attacked various rust areas, fabricating and welding in new metal. I rebuilt the brake calipers, installed new brake discs and pads, new brake hoses. Tuned the engine (ignition timing, vacuum leaks, idle adjustment etc). Installed new rear shocks. Fixed the automatic transmission kick down. The car now really moves!  But the most work was the various rust areas, the fabricating and welding, and subsequent filler/sanding/filler/sanding process to get it all smooth and invisible. I ordered the factory color in single-stage urethane. That gallon plus activator and reducer is sitting ready. Because on Monday it will be paint day.

To get ready for that, over the past week and today I built a temporary paint booth in the 2-car garage. It's almost finished: a professional monster-fan to create positive pressure inside the booth, with a 40 square feet intake filtration box, and also installed 40 square feet of accordion-style exhaust filtration that captures the overspray/airborne paint. Tomorrow will cover floor, ceiling and walls with 4 mil plastic sheeting, and on Monday we will attempt to paint the car (first epoxy primer). Wish me luck! This is the practice for the '73 Lancia that is nearing completion, and then the Spitfire, and my son's 240Z. So the booth and the other paint equipment will get some use.

What are we looking at in the second photo? Is that the back corner of the rear window from inside? How did you fabricate that compound curve there?

Hi DaveB - yes, that is the inside of the panel below the rearmost window. VW had injected some expanding foam on those corners that over time would retain water, rusting out the metal on both the inside and outside on many of these cars. I had to repair both driver and passenger side, inside and out with new metal. I made the compound curve simply with the round head of a ball peen hammer, with the flat part of the metal in a vise. I was surprised at how easy it actually was to do. It's all not perfect, but will mostly be hidden from view by the inner panelling and vinyl. Now that I have had some practice (cutting, grinding, fabricating, welding and finishing) from working on the Lancia and now the VW, the work goes fairly quickly.

Haha, my best friend's mom had one of those DAF 33s. Old people's car reputation, of course I had to have one for a while. Canary yellow was indeed my favorite color.

@ Jonny, I hope to drive the '71 Volkswagen to the Pagodas & Beer in San Diego in two weeks' time. Will at least be a period-correct German car.

Painting the car today. Just finishing up the masking now. Epoxy primer first, then the color.

Damn that looks like fun.   

Years ago I was collecting wood to make a spray booth in the back parking pad and then I kept on getting stalled and months turned into years and my MGB still isn't painted.  I ended up making a play house in the back yard for my little girls with the wood and then gave the left overs to a friend so he could make a playhouse for his little girls.  Our little girls are all now out of university - the play houses are long gone and my MGB still needs major prep work before painting.      What happened?  I thought I'd have lots of time.   I restored and painted 6 cars when I was a teenager.....my old MGB I painted three times

  I guess that's why these cars are hobbies.  I figure you don't need an end date with a hobby.

Thanks guys. Well, I did it, painted it today. Came out quite good, I am very pleased. First I gave it a coat of epoxy primer all over (two coats on the new rear fender). Then 2 coats of the single-stage urethane color. Very shiny, practically no orange peel, and only a few small runs that should sand/buff out easily. I just finished it 2 hours ago, and the paint needs 6 hours to cure, so it won't be until tomorrow morning that I can see 'the full effect', but for a very first paint job, a $30 paint gun and about $200 worth of paint/activator/reducer, it really does look good. Some photos, not that easy to get a good shot in the booth, that just fits this larger-than-expected stationwagon. The first pic is after the epoxy coat:

Some more photos, now with trim, lights etc put back in. There's a bit more orange peel than I would have liked, will see if I can wetsand and polish that out.

Now putting the finishing touches on the car, then I will sell it on BAT. This was a 'general rehearsal' mostly for the painting process before I move onto the Lancia. But it's been fun all the way, and the VW runs very sweet and strong after the couple of maintenance/repairs I did to the engine and ignition. It didn't need much. Saturday will hopefully take me to San Diego and back. I had it on the highway a couple times before and it easily kept up with the 70+ MPH traffic.

As for the painting, I did learn a couple things, about proper gun cleaning and also investing in a proper (not $30) spray gun to begin with. My Iwata LPH400 arrived today ($360), so if I make any mistakes on the Lancia, they're mine, not the gun's. A professional painter can probably get a good result with just about any gun, but I need all the help I can get in the paint department. Also, I got a variable speed controller for my industrial fan in the garage-spray-booth so I can regulate the airflow. Everything else went pretty much to plan and I am still very pleased with the result on my first-ever paintjob. After the Lancia, the 240Z and Spitfire will be next, can hardly wait - painting is fun!

Absolutely, I just spray painted and mounted the chrome-tired front bumper. Now all I need to do is pack a fire extinguisher (better safe than sorry), a USB cord for my phone, and some water, and we'll be off for the 90-mile journey tomorrow morning!
