Mark
Replaced the front oil seal, and three O rings. One large and two smaller. One of the smaller one is for the pressure relief valve.
The vanes felt a bit sticky so I polished them up with chrome polishing compound.

Now the power is back in the steering box. The next issue needs addressing.
The “thud “ noise from the steering. I have read most of the forums but I could not come to any definite conclusion.
The car is going through a major restoration.
New wheel bearing ,king pins & bushes , idler arm bushing checked no wear ,replaced the oil seal, all tie rod ends, steering damper replaced , the steering column universal joint is not replace as is in good condition , no work done to the steering box and the steering column.
The heavy thud noise is actuated when I turn the steering about 6” each side. But I have to do it hard with engine off.
It sounds like as if the steering box is loose on the chassis. But it is not loose. Put three new bolts.
The play in the steering is about 5 degrees.
Could this be a problem inside the box I wonder. How can I make sure that the noise is inside the box. Also there is no grinding noise ,the box works very smoothly otherwise.
Any suggestions how do I go about pinpointing the issue.
I hope i have managed to describe the problem.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

The easiest approach is to work with two people. One turning the steering wheel and the other listening under the hood/at the steering to better locate the noise. It could come from within the steering box. It could also come from the tie rods or wheel ends.

Have a look at this recent post about loose steering box mount bushings. A Technical service bulletin is attached to the post.
May be something to check.

There is a steering box for sale on eBay with following nos. 112 461 27 05. and
109 461 04 01.
It is off a W108  250SE
Any idea if this is compatible with my 250sl box.

My January 1967 parts book says 111 460 46 01 for RHD W113.
Which doesn't necessarily mean 112 461 27 05 won't be compatible but perhaps makes it doubtful.
