Hazard light location 250SL

Hi guys,

I just managed to find an original switch for the hazard lights for my 250SL. Could anyone advise as to where should this be located & also do we have a diagram on how it should be wired up?

Be prepared to built your own sub-harness, but it is not too difficult once you found the necessary connectors:

Hello guys , I’ve always wanted to ask this question . In my 250sl Italian version there is not the hazard switch light . Is this normal ? Why the car wasn’t equipped from the factory ? Thank you

Hello Mauro, i believe US cars had to have hazard warning lights from the mid 60's.  In the UK it wasn't a requirement until the mid 80's, perhaps it was the same in Italy and other parts of Europe

I have a 230SL which was built in the August/September, 1965, time frame but is registered as a 1966 model.  I have had it since new.  The emergency flasher switch is not mounted on the dash at all but is on the left side underneath the dash just in front of the hood release handle.  Very hard to see and you almost have to know about it to find it.  I guess the mounting changed as time passed.

Very strange location for a factory to fit it, from what i've seen it had moved to the dash by 67.  Possibly by 69 or 70 all cars had them from the factory, not just US cars

Dear Mohan

You will need to build something like this. Ser attached picture. That is a hazard relay sub harness. In that way your main harness is not altered.

If it were my car, I would not put it in.  What for?  One less hole in the dash.

I have seen some italian 230sl with the hazard light and some 280s too . I’m wondering if it’s a choice made by Mercedes’ or by the local regulations.

Any 250sl Italian version with no hazard light ? I’m wondering if this item was removed from my car or was never equipped from the factory . I believe is very useful if you drive in modern traffic . If you get stuck in freeway or in a road with no lights.

Mauro12, have you looked behind the fibre board under the dash on the drivers side (next to the hood release cable)?  You may need to remove the fibre board (not the dash itself) (couple of screws) as you won't see it by just looking up under the dash as it is behind the fibre board.  I have a German delivery Oct '66 230SL and I would not have known I had a hazard switch if I hadn't removed those panels under the dash.

That position does sound strange.  Maybe a previous owner moved it out of sight for some reason?

I'll have to look at my car, it was Italian delivery.

Mine was/is located behind this panel.  Interior has since been changed so ignore the colours.

Wow ! Is like a treasure hunt . I will try to look if is hidden there . It’s been 20 years because we haven’t found yet since 2002 when we bought the car .

I don't seem to have hazzard flashers in my Italian delivered 230SL, produced Oct 1966.

Jordan, maybe on your car a previous owner added the wiring and control, but didn't want to drill the metal dash??

No hazard switch in my Italian 250 SL.

No hazard flashers on my UK 230 SL and with the advent of motorways with no hard shoulder to escape to other than refuges at quarter mile intervals I've fitted hazard flashers.
Obtained used 114 flasher from ebay and also the 6 pin female plug.  Soldered 1 wire ( 450 mm long) to each terminal and soldered  3 wires into the existing flasher plug and  3 into the multi plug from the steering column  all as follows
 Terminals 49a,. 15,. And 31 from the new plug (which fits into the new flasher unit) to the corresponding numbers on the original flasher plug. The old flasher is discarded.
The remaining 3 wires from the new plug are routed into the multiplug as follows L goes to black/white,. R goes to black/green and 30 goes to the red/white/blue in the multi plug.  I drilled the hole as per the Mercedes diagram,  it's a snug fit behind the dashboard and I ended up removing the chrome vent and moved the light switch aside to get it fitted. Works great.

My thanks to Jeremy Stevens the Merc club guru for the diagram and also fitting new guts into the switch I bought. I hope that this helps someone
