280SL ENGINE

Hello,

I am interested in a complete running engine/auto gearbox unit.

Location: Greece

This is a US-spec car - Vehicle Type: 113.044 (March 1970)

I would prefer to source the engine from a European supplier or owner.

I have from a heritage about ten M130 engines:
280SL (M139.983)  and 280SE (M130.980)
form an used working condition to new rebuild one. Some of them are without any numbers.
I have also new rebuild fuel injections pumps (R21 or R24Y). So I think I am able to help you.

After I paid few years ago bills for the rebuilding of two Engines for my own cars (W111 and W113) I noticed, that the prices for the parts and services rising from year to year without any reason and are far away from a level, what I will define as normal.

So I decided to start a project to build in Berlin a Mercedes Old timer Engine Centre where the prices for the engines will be significant reduced ( aim is ca. 50% of the current market prices) and the owners can exchange their old engine to an overhauled ones. High quality for a reasonable price. That’s why from one side I purchased a heritage with a big stock of such engines and from the other side I hired one specialized mechanic who is rebuilding since 20 years only the M127-M130 engines and also the FIPs (Fuel Injections Pumps).

This is the reason, why I have not only the M130 engines, but also a lot of M129 and M127.981 engines. Is more a project "pro publico bono", than for a business. But I think, that there is a need for such place in Europe?

And what is the reason in your case Cees? May be we can open a pan European centre if you like this idea?

In my case, after Joe Alexander and I rebuilt my engine (mostly Joe of course) in Ohio in 2003, I thought it would be a nice project to rebuild these engines when I retire. So I started buying up these engines in The Netherlands and Germany, from people's sheds and garages and barns where they typically had been sitting for some time, just in the way. I realized that parts would be getting scarcer and scarcer. I stopped when my own one-car garage in Amsterdam was full (besides the Pagoda and my Husaberg motorcycle), which moment came at 14 engines. I disassembled most engines as I intended to rebuild them or use for parts. For example, I think I have around 20 of the cast iron exhaust manifolds, 12 injection pumps and so on. I sold all the distributors (10) in one go to Dan in Canada.
I have since sold one rebuilt short block to The Netherlands,one good core engine block to Poland. And two good cylinder heads to The Netherlands, one to Van Dijk and one to our own Peter, along with a rebuilt injection pump. So I have tons of parts and some whole engines left.
Yes, Seb, would be happy to collaborate. It's also more a labor of love for me. Just to note, we are now living in California and it will be a while still before we spend a few months a year in France, where the stash is now. But, not going anywhere, so when the time comes, I will be cataloguing all the parts, checking everything for wear tolerances etc and I can then let you know what I have in more detail, so you know what's available to be used in rebuilds.

Cool! You guys: I am still looking for a spare cylinder head for my M130-983. It has to be a head with the markings 280SEL/SL and the casting number 130 016 17 01 and a 9.0;1 compression.
I have a ship-to address in Germany. For a money transaction in Germany, I can use a bank transfer from Deutsche Bank.

Cees! It will be an honour to collaborate with you! Especially that you know the Pagoda world much better than me.
I told to myself, that the idea of an Mercedes Engines Competence Centre I will implement, so I am open for each critical input.

So far I could convinced my “Motorenbauer”, that an engine should not only run excellent but also looks so.  And the price for all this exterior "Hollywood special effects" if you tell ,that is not for an Pagoda but for a 200D are not so high ;-).

I have a complete engine from a April 1969 280SE (130980-12-019004) I'd be willing to sell because I am 89 years old and will never use it.
I also have the automatic transmission, it is labelled: Austausch Getriebe. The torque converter is riveted

Are you sure...?  ???
Your head casting number is not on Joe's (JA's) head list

Yours is a low compression 280 SE engine head that was never used on an SL (SLs did not come with low-compression engines)... but only was used for countries with low-octane fuels back then.
You are significantly loosing power on your Euro-113.044 with this head... :'(
Instead, you should hunt for the correct 130 016 1101 or  ~3201 head.

The head was never changed. I am 99.9% sure. I own the car since 1982 and the only engine work was done under my ownership. I had a connecting rod bearing fail due to water in the oil in 1986 and had the crank redone in Frankfurt. In the meantime, I have found two other 280SLs with the same head. It is somewhat of a mystery how this head got on the engine in my car.

If this is a 280SE only and not an SL head, why does it say 280SEL/SL on it?
I know the head is not on Joe's list, but so are others. That list is not complete.

Hello Achim,
The cylinder head that I have available came off a 1970, 280sl UK registered from new, the original owner/purchaser was an experienced racing driver so would know what he was ordering and I assure you it is original to the car, it also has 280 SEL/SL stamped on the head.
The cylinder head that I fitted to the car (rather than the original) had a different number stamped on it I measured the combustion spaces and they were the same.

This has been a discussion that has ben going on for a long time and some members are sure tired of it.
Fact is, the head on my 280SL, delivered in December of 1970 in Germany is the original one in the car and so are some others out there.
None of our "experts" has weighed in and made a comment that could shed light on what was going on.
During my ongoing quest to find out, I discovered that late model 280SL heads all had the compression ratio number omitted from the head and that most likely all U.S. versions were 9.0:1 instead of the earlier 9.5:1. Maybe that was the case for the rest of the world too and other countries just had the number still on the head.
There is also a slight difference in the shape of the combustion chambers of late heads I have posted pictures) for the reason of which nobody has been able to make a convincing statement
I have communicated with several owners who have cars with serial numbers later than mine (22774) and all had 280SE/A or 280SE/SL heads, but they were all U.S. cars.
The ID 280SEL/SL is quite unique and it still needs to be determined what cars at what time these heads were used on
I am afraid, in spite of the great collective knowledge in this forum, we will not get an answer for this here.

I’m only 46 but have a similar feeling about the motor in the 1969 280se in my driveway.  If anyone is interested I am on the East Coast of the US, Wilmington, Delaware.  I can pull the motor or leave it in the intact chassis if that’s where a buyer prefers it.
