Bend hose for between power steering oil tank and pump?

Hi

I am struggling to find an oil / petrol hose with an inner diameter of 15-16 mm (5/8"), which has a bend in the middle.

It has to be used between the oil tank and the power steering pump, and unfortunately the two are quite close and the bend is quite sharp, which the hose has to cover. I have tried two different hoses, one of which is a straight radiator hose and the other a straight oil hose, and both are insanely difficult to get on, and you can see the result in the pictures! 😕

So I have been looking and looking for a hose with 90 degree bend. But it is very difficult to find without it being a specific hose for a specific car, and where I then cannot see the dimensions of the hose.

Unfortunately, Mercedes (or SLS, Niemöller etc.) does not prescribe a bend hose for the power steering system. So how they imagine it could be done with a straight hose, I have no idea! 🙁

Any good advice or links? 🙂

I am strictly going from memory.
On my 82 thru 85 300sd diesel models, there is a small hose at the front of the engine
That is a 90 degree hose that goes from the thermostst housing to the pipe that goes to the firewall
that brings the radiator fluid to the heater core.
It is not a large hose for the inside diameter.

I just went in the cellar and found the old hose ( I never throw out old pieces, you never know when you
need them for reference, like now)
The part number is 123-832-75-94 Hose.
Hope this does the trick for you.

Loosen the fitting going into your power steering pump and move the end of the pipe so that it's closer to your engine block. This should remove the kink in the hose.

Thanks, it helped a bit and the kink is smaller, but still there.

However, now I called a hose supplier here in Denmark and he sold me a silicone hose with viton lining and a 90 degree bend, and he insured me that the hose can withstand automatic transmission fluid.

It should also be more flexible and easier to mount. Let’s see! Will report back. :-)

Viton would be a good material for ATF. Do NOT use a coolant hose!!! That is meant for water and ATF will destroy that in no time. When substituting, you have to be very careful to know what rubber material you are using with what media.

I also use the uncoil in this application and works just fine.

I used a cloth wrapped hose and put a third hose clamp at the apex of the bend for a few months until the hose settled in.

UPDATE:

I mounted the bend silicone hose with viton lining, and I must say it works GREAT! It’s a much better solution than trying to adjust the pipes to use a straight hose, which in any case will not be a straight path, and you have to do a lot of trail and error adjustments to get an acceptable result.

Also, the silicone 5/8” (15-16 mm) inner diameter hose is very easy to mount on the pipes, compared to an all rubber oil or hydraulic hose. Just remember to get a silicone one with an inner lining which can withstand ATF, eg. a viton lining.

Thus, I can highly recommend this solution!
