280 SL Center Console: Carpeting ?
« on: May 03, 2005, 06:04:37 »
At what point did the wooden tray in a 280 SL get fitted with a small piece of carpeting instead of a piece of vinyl like the 230 & 250 SL? When did the transition occur?

Douglas!  YOU are the one who is supposed to answer this kind of question!  What are we to think now?  If Jonny B doesn't have the answer, we're doomed!

Actually, this is the kind of thing Achim can answer off the top of his head, complete with the VIN of the changeover.

Achim has been awfully quiet lately...have not heard from him in a while.

Well, I can only say that my 250SL (VIN -----1344)has a carpet piece in it. I am traveling this week, and have no reference books. Will be curious to hear from others.

Douglas:
At the time of delivery to my father in April 1968 1130440012001906 had the slim vinyl trimed peice in the center tray. In looking over early and late sales brochures of the W113 I would venture to speculate that the carpet peice replaced the extra trimed MB tex in later 1969 or 1970 models.
I have tried to order a center carpet peice from Mercedes-benz in black for my center tray butwhat they send me fits a R107 SL andis too short.I was told to go to one of the upholstery manufactors that sell kits and buy one from them.
Since I intend to replace the carpeting in my car I felt I could wait and get it all done in one full swoop.
by the way I want to thank Naj for sending me a copy of the May issue of Mercedes-Enthusiast all the way from England.

Vinyl?  I thought the piece originally matched the upholstery -- leather if the seats, etc. were leather.

My insert is leather but don't know if that's how it was originally delivered.

My insert is vinyl.  It does not match the cream M-B Tex, but rather is an exact match to the darker, almost olive brown, vinyl pads on both of the window cranks.  It appears to have originally had a thin foam pad backing, which has disintegrated with age.  One can just make out some vestiges of foam adhering to the underside of the insert.

Mike, or any of ya, is the original vinyl style glued in at all or does it just lay in there?

Mine was an empty box 25 years ago (no signs of vinyl)-- it now has a square-weave piece that came with new carpet kit.

At the risk of straying off topic, in my case, I am pretty far away from the point where I would replace the carpeted mats w/originals. A lot of restoration would have to happen first, I'd say. But thanks anyway, D.

Gents:

My '70 W113 has a small carpet in the centre consol tray, bound edges and everything!!  It matches the carpeting in the car.  If anyone wants a JPEG, let me know.
