W111 Hood release cable
« on: September 05, 2021, 12:57:39 »
Beautiful day here today in Tuscany, so I wanted the take my 220SE Cab out for a drive.  I normally check the oil before each drive and the cable lever of the hood release felt funny.  I pushed it back into the closed position and noticed that the cable had snapped.  Darn.  Any tips from the group for sourcing a good quality cable and any tips and tricks for replacing it and installing it properly?  My car was "restored" 2 years ago, and this is just another thing that has gone wrong.

How about original: A 108 880 01 59, ca EUR 200, 72 hours availability (better check the PN, I did not have your VIN).

Or here: https://www.niemoeller.de/en/w111/w111/B023/65/d88336-hood-release-cable

On installation (just went through it in W113) - there may be car model specifics, but to me it seemed - make sure the routing is proper, no bends, then adjustment and lubrication of the cable and lock.

I realized I did not know how to open the hood in case the cable snaps...

Pawel, thank you for your quick reply.  The lever came off its pin, so I have a short length of cable which I can grab with a vice grip and pull.  If a cable snaps in the engine compartment, then I do not know how I would open the hood without damaging the grill (easiest access to the locking mechanism).  The Niemoeller part has an original MB part number of 111 880 00 59.
How did you get the original MB part number?

The part number from Niemoeller was replaced by the part number I provided. I was looking in 111.023 assuming it is this VIN first 6 digits, but I am not sure.

I ended up ordering this cable from the German VDH Club Shop: 108 880 0159, original MB part for Euro 154.  It fit my W111 023 perfectly and I am pretty sure that the part the restorer installed and which snapped, was a cheap repro replacement, since the original MB part feels much more "positive".

For my W113 restoration I bought a Gemo hood release cable. It appropriately is a four letter word. Ended up replacing it with the original to the car. Will revisit installing a new one but it will for sure by MB.

Hello & thx for the comments & part number on this hood release system.  What I did not read are the details of : lubricating the cable, how TO PREVENT the cable breaking while the hood is closed ! , how to open the hood if the cable breaks ? thx in advance for your replies.
