How rare is a green vinyl tool kit case. from 280sl.  1970?

Have not seen many in that color, but probably limited by the number of green tops or interiors. The color of the bag that would be in any particular car would be a matter of chance and not correlated with the car color. These bags were made from pieces of material (either the canvas.MBTex, or sometimes leather) left over.

I have seen two turquoise weave kits and 1 dark green kit cover in the last 5 years.

I was told many years ago that each tool kit was made from the rear window cut out from the soft top from that car. 
How true this is i don’t know but supposedly the soft top colour was the same as the tool bag colour for each car.

I think the (sort of) consensus on this is:
- tool bags for other models were made of relatively inexpensive canvas
- SLs got the tool bags made of scraps of soft tops and upholstery
- there was no matching, however, of your car getting the tool bag made of he same fabric or upholstery material as the car was equipped with; these came at random

Having said that, I believe that if a given material was rarely used, the tool bags of this color were also rare. This is unless e.g. Daimler ordered some material, the usage was low and there were plenty of leftovers that were consumed for tool bags.

These are all my thoughts based on quite a lot of reading of the forum.

Maybe the selection of the tool bag color isn't random at all. Maybe the person responsible for placing the tools in the truck considered each cars individual aura and selected a bag based on what they felt the car might like.

Yes, could be . The aura consideration then might have varied from person to person. Or there might have been strict instructions. I guess we do not know. From the discussions so far it looked random, that is all.

It was most assuredly a random selection with the 190 SL and 300 SL series. There is no evidence to suggest that this practice was changed for the Pagoda cars.
