HELP How should the evap can be installed?
« on: May 15, 2005, 18:28:56 »
Hi. Now that I know WHAT that can is in the trunk (thanks), may I ask if anyone has a picture of its proper orientation/installation.

It is entirely loose in my trunk.

no idea how its meant to be mounted/fastened.

The plastic can should have a metal strap that enables it to snap into slots on the trunk side panel.

In my 230sl the tank just sits behind the insulation. There are no fixings. :?

I think there is some type of bracket tucked up in the inner fender. I can check my car this evening to be sure and to report on the orientation of the tank. I think there are three metal tubes coming out of the bottom of the tank. The two smaller ones are for the vent lines from the tank and the larger one for the vent to the outside. The connections on mine are a combination of small hoses and small metal tubes. The metal tubes snake from the filler neck area to the inner fender with the hoses providing the connection. The vent tube has one small rubber hose, the metal tube and the funnel shaped vent thing hanging down from the rear valence panel. Just to the left (as you are looking at the rear of the car) of the exhaust tips.

There is a metal mounting clip on the left fender.. part number    001 988 65 78.
Probably missing.  The protrusion on the top of the tank clips into it.

If you open the deck lid and romove the filler neck cover, you can see where the two smaller tubes connect to the fuel tank and maybe where the larger tube goes through the floor of the trunk to the outside atmosphere.  I have not disected one of these cannisters but I imagine it is like others I have seen.  One of the lines from the tank carries vapors to the cannister and the other carries any condensate back to the tank.  The larger line is a vent to the atmosphere.  It carries fumes from the tank to the outside and lets air into the tank as fuel is used.  If your fuel cap is air tight and the vent lines are stopped up, the car may start up and run good for a while.  Then it will start to run poorly or even stop.  Some people may call this a vapor lock.  Any way just to be safe, check to make sure the tank can get breathe.

Good luck

Iverson

I did check the small evaporator tank on my car. There is a clip in the fender, and mine is strapped to it using a zip tie (guess I need to investigate the proper clip). In any case, the two small tubes (80 mm) are oriented to be toward the front of the car, the larger tube (110mm) is at the back. And as Iverson said it is the vent to air.

My car is a 1969; the tanks changed over time; I think there were carbon canisters and other sized and shaped beasts over time.  This is one of those things that is ill documented in MB manuals.  My cardboard filler panel on the passenger/right side of the trunk has pre-cut slots in it, and metal clips on the tank hang it from these slots.

New (as in brand new bought today)tanks have integral plastic lines which go to the vent lines on the tank.  Older tanks like mine have brass ferrules and use a combination of cloth covered rubber fuel line, little clamps, and steel fuel pipe to go from the overflow tank to the fuel tank.  Then of course there is the vent from the tank which goes to that funnel shaped thing, the FST.

It isn't a vapor recovery tank; it is a fuel overflow tank, much like the tank inside the engine bay for the coolant.  I cut one open and there's nothing inside.  Heat expands the fuel in the fuel tank, and the resulting expansion and pressure push some fuel through the lines into this plastic tank.  As the fuel cools, it gets sucked back into your fuel tank.

I am curious about these cardboard filler panels... In my trunk, the exp. tank just dangles suspended on the right side. The sidewalls of the trunk are basically the backside of the fender. Should I have something else? and if so, would that tank be hidden between the filler and fender?

Jim,

There are cardboard filler panels which bend and curve to fit the inside of the trunk; there is one on either side.  I can't speak for cars earlier then mine, but they were standard on 1969's.  They are readily available (or were last summer at least when I bought a new set) from MB, and they didn't bust the bank.  They have kind of a black plastic coating or laminate on one side (that faces the inside of the trunk) and they "finish up" the trunk.  Over time, they get curved and don't fit too well, hence my replacements last year.

Thanks Mike, obviously mine are long gone. Is your expansion tank behind the panel or visible?

I'll have to look into them. Need to see if my golfclubs will still fit! Kind of tight in there as it is!!

Jim,

They don't take up any room at all, they kind of hug the inner fender panel.

On my car, earlier than Mike's, the expansion tank is on the outside of the fender lining material. Since it is in the right rear fender, the tank is well hidden by the spare tire.

Thanks. I think I can picture it. Now mine has the spare on the left but I can see how the tank will hug the panel pretty easily.

Just like that "the list" got longer! [:p]

I posted a pic in your other thread.  No need to start a new thread, really.  It's the same topic.
