You may want to post the differential gear ratio. It should be stamped into a flat machined surface on the side of the diff.

Good idea, Cees. I am at the point to move this in storage, may as well do that now. I am however sure this is stock 1964 230SL diff, whatever the common ratio was for that model.

Interested ( and am in Canada) but need rear diff ratio.  It’s stamped lower front drivers side on the diff housing.  Will likely be ( from Dr Benz, Lambton , Ontario) :” The lowest standard gearing in a 113 is 4.08  There is also 3.92, 3.75, and 3.69  3.75 was only available on 230SL's and is a drum brake axle. “

the diff internals read 3.75 . assume the axle is the same, as both came from a 230SL resto.

CABRIOLETTETURBO ( vendor):
One of your replies is a bit confusing.  I think you are indicating diff ratio is 3.75 correct?  Kindly post a pic of stamping on diff housing pls.
Below is pic of differential housing stamping (4.08) from my 1970 280 SL, as an example ( lower left side of housing….likely covered in road grime).

So I guess I could not find the ratio on the diff drum. I will have another crack at it, as it may be on a completely different place since it is off of an ealry 230SL (middle bottom, rear of the drum).

Cabrioletturbo,
I've never had a differential open.  Where's the ratio stamped on the internals?  On some of the actual gears?  Just curious.

Bshaunessy,
Do you also have a 230 now?  Or, are you looking for a gearing transplant doner to change the ratio inside your 280 differential/axle?

Have 1970 280 SL auto with a 4.08 diff.  I was looking for a lower ratio diff to transplant .  The ratio of the 230 diff in this post remains a mystery.

I've never done such work, but it seems on our forums people more often swap entire rear axles to get the diff ratio they want.  Maybe some experts will share what it takes to do a diff transplant in the axle assembly.  (Or, try a good search.)  It might be worth waiting on a disk brake axle with a desirable ratio already present.
