A lot of cars have that. I think recent discussions might have suggested that even though you could order it as an option, owners might have ordered these mirrors after some time of driving the car - just because it was useful. I am not sure if it is a significant violation of originality.

I think it is very practical. It needs to be in certain position as it is quite tricky to set it so that you see in it what you are supposed to see.

You may want to look through threads and see if the mirror position is somehow marked inside the aluminum frame. Otherwise I think there were posts indicating the place to attach this mirror. Do not forget the holding plate underneath.

The right side mirror was an option for the 280SL, so originality would not be an issue. Also in judging it would be acceptable under the "safety" exemption. I added mine many years ago and it was not difficult to install. I like the look of both mirrors too IMHO.

The left and right side mirrors are set at different positions. The passenger side mirror is set back due to the turn in of the mirror and if put in the same position as the drivers mirror will be obstructed by the A pillar.  Don’t ask how i know.

There has been quite a bit written here if you do a search to get the correct measurements for fitting.

Thank you everyone. More to this simple question than I imagined. Thanks for the heads-up on the originality non-issue, placement of the mirror, and convex glass. So placement of the right-hand mirror is not the same. I'll have to go back and reread the earlier threads to understand exactly where the mirror should be placed.

Is the holding plate for the right side only? I ordered one when putting the drivers side back and it would not fit.

It is for both mirrors (at least this is what I had and have).

I never checked if the right hand side is the same as left hand side (I could find none on the parts list, actually, neither left nor right for W113).

Maybe there is a re-enforcement there in the door structure as of certain VIN?

To have the reinforcement built in already.
