1964 Driver side mirror
« on: February 15, 2022, 00:47:45 »
My 230SL was originally produced in June -64 and delivered to an owner in Switzerland. When I bought it, the side mirror was in an incorrect location and now during restoration it’s been put in the right spot. However, the standard correct location is completely untouched which begs a question…

Were the cars in Switzerland delivered without mirrors?

Did someone add the mirror afterwards in this “easier” spot or could it have possibly been delivered that way?

Picture for clarification… current “easier” mirror location holes plugged.

Yes Pete, this is the case.
There were some countries in the World that did not demand an outer rearview mirror when our cars were new. France and Italy were among them, and I believe Spain too. Not sure about Switzerland but very well may have been.
Later on during the sixties or early seventies rearview mirrors became mandatory in these countries and "anything" was mounted just to fulfill the law.
That's why you found "unusual holes" to be filled in.

Thanks Achim. That was my best guess as well.
