Older threads

I was just wondering what is the reason why we can’t revive older threads?
There is so much information back there. Like this one for example. Dating back to 2005. It made me better understand the “normal” for the engineering of the day.

Most of that thread from 15+ years ago was off the mark. TDC idle ignition timing or less for a 250SL or 230SL is has far too much retard on the ignition timing. 8 degrees BTDC at idle and about 38 - 40 degrees total advance at or above 3,000 RPM is where you want things. This is my recommendation for 230, 250, and early 280 SL's with cast iron distributors. Late 280SL USA style ignition systems use different timing specs but regardless of that, you should still get 38 degrees of total timing advance when it's all working right. MB engines from this time period simply won't make good power without enough advance. 30 -32 degrees full advance will run OK but it won't make good power.

Yeah, but we do it every week.

I see you didn't actually read through that old thread or you probably wouldn't be saying that. 15 years later and many here still have no idea what the workshop manual means by 30 degrees BTDC with vacuum disconnected.

I can open up any old thread for you to post into. Just mail the topic number or the URL to me at admin@sl113.org.

The reason the system locks old threads is because you resurrect old discussions and frequently the people who were in a discussion are not even on the forum anymore. For around 90% of the threads resurrecting is not very sensible. For the remaining 10% just ask me.

And... it is why we developed the Technical Manual. As Dan correctly indicates, frequently there is noise and incorrect information in the forum threads. In the Technical Manual we would like to get a representation of what we think is correct...

Exactly. Those members embarking on any serious project (be it replacing or restoring brakes, or changing out the muffler, or any project with a defined start to finish) should consider documentation with good photos and then contributing new topics or augmenting those that are there.

Just in the time this forum has been in existence, nearly everyone has obtained a smart phone and unless you are operating some pre-historic one, most smart phones today (late model Samsung/Google phones, and most iPhones made in the past 10 years) can run circles around cameras of yesteryear, so it's so easy to do good documentation.

FYI I was reminiscing in the thread that MarkCan mentioned, as there were two contributors there who were frequent posters at the time. These were ADalton and George Davis who are no longer members...

...and speaking of members of the past, there was one named Glenn Fiscus who did come to a meeting we had in Mooresville at a cars and coffee back in the fall. Imagine my surprise the other day, when driving through Lincoln County, I see his political signs on the side of the road!  How often does THAT happen to you, fellow members? Glenn was the guy who created the PUB name!
