Upper door trim help
« on: March 25, 2022, 22:10:42 »
I recently acquired my grandmother’s 1966 230SL which is such a dream!

I need some help figuring out the trim clip situation on my driver door please. The piece keeps coming off. There are two kind so clips on the trim piece. The whisker piece stays connected to the trim piece but the entire things keeps falling off the door.

It seems I am missing the screws on each end, but need verification. Can anyone please help me? Is there a drawing that shows how this should work?

Thank you for your help!

I'm working on this now and have found the correct clips available at both Authentic Classics and SLS. SLS has an especially helpful diagram attached. At the top of each door it appears that 4 different clips are used so you need to be sure to get the clips that meet your specific need. I have not yet tried to attach anything there so suggest you check carefully the SLS diagram to ID the right clip(s).  Lee

Here is (enclosed) what parts lists are saying. You may not have the number 339 if your car is late. The numbers in the windows are numbers of pieces required for the car.
Availabilities refer to my dealer: yellow dot 72hrs, green dot 24hrs. Prices are in PLN.

Leester,
Thank you for your reply. I’m checking out these links today. If you happen to have a photo of your clips and project, it would be helpful to see.

Best to you in your project.

I received the clips from SLS but have not started assembly since I'm waiting on return of Chrome Strips from re-chroming. As Pawell pointed out, there are actually 3 different clips and maybe a fourth. My car is a 1970 so there may be differences.

But here are the pictures of the different clips from SLS identified by their MB part number.  The SLS numbers are 272951 for 001 988 9278 and 272952 for 001 988 9678. I forgot to copy down the SLS number for 001 988 9678. I bought other parts from SLS which is why I bought the clips there. If you want to buy from Authentic which is usually my go to source just enter the MB part number in the search.

From your original posting it sounds like you do NOT need 001 988 9278 since that is for the inside whisker.  I did not disassemble my car so reassembly of the door will also be a challenge for me. I will take a closer look at the pictures in your original post. I do not know if there were any additional screws but my guess is no - I think that outside chrome strip is intended to attach with just the clips.

Hope this helps

Its hard for tell from your pictures but if you go back to the SLS diagram, 100 is the outside chrome strip and 65 is the outside whisker. 101 appears to be the clip (5 needed) that attaches the chrome strip to the top of the door. At least that's how I interpret the diagram and the item descriptions. Is it possible that you don't have the right clips on the chrome piece - or possibly they are not attached correctly.
