Which is the best branded Paint

Hi Everybody,

My 280SL will be ready for painting in two weeks but I haven't had time to till now to look into thing.
My painters say he only uses the top brands and after prep ect, then sprays a matt top coat and then a final  lacquered top coat. Not  the way cellulose is applied.
If any member with first hand experience of having a total respray then I would welcome your advice and names of paint manufacturers.

Your painter may want to use the brand they are used to working with. The brands are all somewhat different so once they build up experience with one, many prefer to stick to that brand. Plus they need to have the whole assortment of colors, reducers, hardeners, primers etc that are matched, so they may not like switching to another brand just for one car. But maybe it's not an issue in your case.

Hard to answer that for a location outside the U.S.
Here I second Vander for mentioning PPG. They have a superior service and support system and can really match the paint you try to have. Not so important for a complete repaint, but still. Taking the paint sample from, e.g.: the dash panel, they will mix the exact hue.

The brand is step 1. Then ask what products within the brand since all manufacturers offer a Good, Better and Best. Before my car was painted I had already made several trips to my painters shop, saw other cars he was working on and asked questions. We talked about Glasurit but ended up using PPG since that was what the shop preferred and had experience with. Plus, I was in no position to argue with the results I saw performed on their other clients cars.

Hi All,
The bodyshop owner who is  restoring my car is also going to paint it gave me a list of the brands he used.
These are:   Lechler,  Standon,  Sikens, and
                      PPG.
I was encouraged that PPG came up pretty high with quite a few members but could I ask is this based on things like ease of application, durability,  colour match ( white 050 ) accuracy and anything I have missed out.

I am not familiar with modern auto paints and wondered if the ICI is a solid colour with gloss combined opposed a matt top coat with a final lacquered coat.

Do you see the ICI product superior to other brands for any reason,  it would be helpful to know.
Your car looks stunning in that colour and I've seen something very similar of a 280SL owner who resides in Cumbria.

I personally painted my car about 20 years ago with single state PPG and it still looks good. I’m surprised to hear lacquer paint still mentioned. Interesting but if it’s the same lacquer from old it’s very forgiving to paint but I don’t think it’s as durable as current paints.
But I’m no expert and I haven’t painted a car since.

I think he means clear coat.  Lacquer is a generic term just like classic car is to old car.

I personally painted my Road Runner from bare metal using all PPG products. No complaints what so ever and is a beautiful, durable finish (base coat /clearcoat). The one thing I would mention that is probably more important than the brand, and that is to use one line for everything. Do not mix brands. This is a chemical concoction from the primer filler all the way to the clear coat. You want to make 100% sure it is all compatible.

Sherwin Williams also has a good line of paint but liked PPG better.

Thanks for your input on this topic is been very useful  to the point I've decidedly to use the PPG paint brand and also because my painter is very familiar in it's use.

I went on to  the PPG website and was impressed by what I could see.
