pump lubrication
« on: October 16, 2022, 04:37:49 »
Hello,
I am about to start my engine for the first time after rebuild. Its a 250sl motor with R18 pump. I know that motor normally lubricates the injection pump. Since everything was completely dry, is it necessary or recommended to add some oil to the pump direct prior to start up?

Thank you
Dirk

Hello Dirk, i've read up on these pumps and most of it goes right over my head

However, it seems the earlier pumps have their own oil reservois, as well as taking an oil feed from the engine, these two links explain it quite well.  It doesn't say whether oil should be added if the car has not been started for a while, but reading other posts about starting long resting engines doesn't indicate that this is needed, perhaps someone with more knowledge could chime in and advise. The 2nd link is the only picture i could find of where the oil dipstick is located

Check the oil level on the IP using the dip stick and add a little bit if needed.

Remove the spark plugs, add a bit of oil to each cylinder, and then spin the engine over with the starter until you see oil pressure on your gauge. I use water in the cooling system until I'm satisfied that I have no leaks; internal or external. Ordinary water will evaporate - anti freeze, not so much.
