Alternator bracket assembly
« on: December 17, 2022, 20:21:25 »
Hi gents

Puzzled….

I took a lot of picture before removing the assembly but of course… the view I need is missing

Therefore I show you what I did, hoping you can guide me. Like this the assembly can freely move around its axle, which I wonder wether or not is normal…

Secondly the bracket that allows to tune the tension of the belt appears to have rubber grommets and spacers… lost as well, also due to the fact that the fixture diameter to go on the engine block is much larger than the rod where it is supposed to be screwed. In other words even with rubber spacer/ grommets there’s a lot of play even if I screw the nut…

Well totally lost… picture and tips welcomed…👍👍👍

Here's my setup, also a 1965 model. The alternator is a replacement but I think the brackets are original. Not sure about the washers.

Thanks
I feel less alone with those greasy pictures 😂😂😂
More or less we end up with the same assembly

My question is about the possibility to freely bend the alternator on its axle because it’s a bit surprising to me but as the contact is made with rubber grommets we can have a tight torque…

Concerning the tension bracket, mine is different, and your pic doesn’t help too much… but the same question applies… this tension bracket would be easy to move as far as I feel…

Found also that : https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=12946.msg87841#msg87841

And this : https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=23595.msg168706#msg168706

But doesn’t answer to what goes inside the eye like fixture of the tensioner bracket…

That ugly sludge is keeping the metal in perfect condition! But I hope the engine internals don't look like that.

The alternator needs to rotate reasonably freely on that bolt so as long as the bolt is a good interference fit through the bracket and the alternator lug that shouldn't be a problem, although your rubber grommets don't look very 'Mercedes' (but might be).

Your tensioning arm thing has been cut and welded, but the base looks original, so to fit it properly you probably need the nut/spacer/washers shown in the attached diagram. Based on that diagram it looks like the arm fits onto a stud in the block, is that right? (because the diagram shows a nut not a bolt).
Maybe you could look for a whole new assembly, I think it might be the same as the W108/110/111.

Thanks for that lead… yes there’s a stud in the block and the tensioner has been frankesteinesed to fit the 55A alternator  😂😂😂😂

Anything would normally fit together that’s a question of where goes what and despite the pictures I took I have to break my brain again to mix everything back properly. Everything posted helps a lot 👍👍
