Need a spare tire cover
« on: March 07, 2023, 18:21:20 »
While having body work done on my 1971 280 SL, the body shop lost the cover for the spare tire. I'm looking to replace it.

I have seen two different covers. One has a flap/cover over the tool kit. The other one does not and it just flat on top. May be two different car models. I wonder if there was a difference for the alloy wheel.

Mine is not original, but it has the flap which is convenient as you can use the space in the spare wheel for some storage.

Here is my original cover. January 1969 production.  I have not seen one without the flap. As you can see mine is a bit stretched due to the 195/75R14 spare (matching the four mounted tires on the ground) which is a little fatter than the original 185HR14.  This is the max size spare tire that can be mounted with the cover. I don’t know what was mounted with the alloy wheel.

Does anyone know if the early 230SL’s with the verticals tire, were supplied with a spare tire cover?

I suspect not, but the many generous experts here always find a way to uncover the smallest of originality details.

There's a point, Ralph! The flap cover will not fit over the Bundt alloy as that wheel mounts upside down,

Mike,
.....meaning the outside of the wheel with the bundt design up??   I don't think I have seen a picture of the bundt wheel mount for the spare nor of the bundt wheel mounted there.

We had an extensive discussion about that. I am not on my home PC right now and cannot find the thread. I tried to make a drawing of the special alloy wheel spare holder and Pat (Shvegel) actually fabricated a couple and gave me one.

So, it seems I was wrong again. Did not remember that quite right. The alloy wheel was mounted the same way, we found out. I have not mounted the holder in my car and did not remember what was what.

Good morning,
I guess I put this on here because, as stated by another reader, the expertise on here is incredible!!
I have recently put a ton of money into the car to get it back both mechanically and the body. My goal has been to keep it as original as possible.
Mine did not have the pocket - but I have seen the pocket on just about any car I see at the shows.
What is the condition of the original one you have?

Thank you for replying.
I have never seen this type cover before. Mine was solid, with no cover. The ones I have seen recently have snaps that close the flap.
I did not realize there were so many types for a spare tire cover :)
