New drivers side glass does not fit
« on: March 18, 2023, 13:31:49 »
My mechanic did a great job of fitting my drivers side glass to reduce wind noise at speed. Only problem is that I closed the door too hard and the glass shattered. Even more troubling, the replacement glass from Mercedes Classic does not fit. Here's how my local shop explained the problem, followed by their illustrative pic (on a different Pagoda).

"When installing the glass into the door and rolling it up, it leaves a gap on the forward side of the door where it meets the top of the door/convertible top.  The gap, at the furthest forward part of the door is about a half inch and it tapers back towards the rear of the car for about 3 inches to where it sits flush.  I attached a picture of a passenger side door glass with yellow indicating where the gap is."

The shop even ordered a second glass from Mercedes, and it fit the same way. The shop is wondering if the windshield post is out of alignment. But that wondering is as far as we've gotten.

Ideas?

ps. I should add that prior to all this I had the soft top and gasket replaced, in case that might be a factor. And, when the glass shattered, the soft top was up, not the hard top.

I recently just changed both driver and passenger glass.  Before I did, I changed all the surrounding rubber trim (three sides) as well as the bottom whiskers.  My glass came from the Classic Center.

While it is no help, I am sorry to say that mine fits fine.

I guess the first question would be: Did the old glass line up with the top rubber trim?

Yes it did, as does the right side glass.

FWIW when I replaced my passenger side window around 2015 with new MB glass it fit fine. I shattered the old one tweaking the adjustment just a bit too far. Slight additional pressure and Boom!

I suspect yours needs to be fitted differently, but you could try calling MB to see if they have had any complaints recently.

Most likely nothing is wrong with the new glass but your installer may not have the experience ... or the patience.
It is a time consuming iterative procedure.
MB of North America provided to its dealers a Service Information that I had added to our technical manual:
https://www.sl113.org/wiki/ChassisBody/Windows
Copy the four pages and hand them over to your local shop. Illustration 3 shows how to adjust the gap that you mentioned and the pre-tensioning procedure (Illustration 6) should prevent a repeat of glass shattering.

Good luck!

Alfred, which figures do you consider Illustrations 3 and 6?

Not sure I understand your question, Keith. The "Illustrations" are graphic drawings of the adjustment parts.

Go to the link that I provided https://www.sl113.org/wiki/ChassisBody/Windows
Scroll down to "Window Adjustment Procedure" and you'll see 4 pages of Mercedes-Benz Service Information issued in November 1968.
Illustration 3 is on the bottom of the second page and Illustration 6 on the last one.

Browsing on my phone, I see the 4 pages posted in line with the rest of the material.  I don't see a download link. Regardless, it is clear that these are the 4 pages of the MB guide.

Rodd, there is no download link.
These are jpeg files and on your phone just tap the image and select the option (share, print, copy ...) you want.
On a computer it depends on the browser you use. Usually a mouse right click on the image brings up these options.

Thank you Alfred. I had not scrolled down far enough to see the numbered illustrations. I am forwarding that section to my shop. Thanks again.

Copy the four pages and hand them over...
For some reason my brain translated "copy" into "download". My bad.
