BAT Tool kit - has the world gone fully crazy
« on: May 17, 2023, 03:53:30 »
Just saw that a BaT auction for a Pagoda tool kit just ended with a final bid of $3280!!

I understand that the kit is relatively rare, but that is just a ridiculous price, for a non complete tool kit. I take that back, it is a completely ridiculous price. A little patience could net you a kit in pieces from eBay, granting that finding the 300 pliers with the star will be a test.

Or join the group, post a note and save a WHOLE bunch of money.

Fully at a loss on this one.

I agree completely!  Glad I have a complete one in the trunk of my 230SL.

I was paying attention to this as I don't have a "correct" tool roll. I was "out" a while ago when it exceeded my limit (happened before I even bid)...... I scratched my head as well, as that number was very high......

..and that tool kit was not even correct for all W113s, as one comment stated. And it was missing the fuse pliers. Rarest item of all.

I wonder if the sale of all those 356 tool kits influenced the result.  Now they were going for crazy money.

For that kind of money you can find some nice vintage cars to have fun with, like this one (ok a few hundred more):

BAT bidders can be a bit "hard headed" and stubborn when it comes to bidding. Most of the time, they don't have a clue as to what they are bidding on. I had warned a bidder about a certain BAT W113 over a year ago. I got roasted by the BAT masses, telling me I was probably a "know it all" W113.org member. After the poor soul bought the 280SL, he emailed me to tell me he bought a pile of rust. Over $110K worth of rust, to be exact.

Should change the name to Bring a Brain, first and foremost!

Indeed you are [a know it all W113 member]...you've paid your dues, wear it proudly. Let the clueless remain clueless.

Absolutely Michael. None of us ever profess to "know it all" about our beloved 113's. We are learning all the time.

Go to BAT, completed auctions, then search for 'tool kit' and voila:

Yes, I know how to hunt and peck around.

Internet etiquette is to usually include a link to something you're posting about.

E.g.:

"Wow, just saw an awesome 300SL Gullwing on Mecum go for $2.6M!"

My toolkit was missing the Heyco slip joint pliers and I was able to locate over time three different pairs on eBay.  All with the embossed logo and both style jaws.  I’ve also picked the wooden handle screw driver set, the correct Hapewe pliers, fuse pliers, etc., etc.  I even picked up two additional rolls printed with the star on the interior.  I now have three complete, 100% correct sets…all in better condition than the one that sold on BAT!

To Jonny B’s point: It requires a little patience but it can be done. I doubt I have anything more than a couple hundred dollars in each set.
