Another 230 restored. Food for thought on values…
« on: June 23, 2023, 00:38:57 »
Got my 230SL out of the shop couple weeks ago. MOT done and back on the road. Few pics of what we started from and where we ended up.

Got the car appraised by Classic Data (Hagerty of Europe) and it seems they appraise “concours” level cars at the actual value of getting a car done to those specifications rather than the book values. Classic Data valuation of this 230: 262 000€ Anyone interested?  ;)

Open for comments about originality. I know it’s not 100% but trying as close as possible…

Thanks. It’s medium blue 396.

On another note, just noticed the engine compartment pic is missing the windshield washer bag… I have it, just don’t keep it there while driving because it messes up the paintwork.

Interior pics? Are you planning to sell?

I got the interior woodwork out of it now for final touches and don’t have a pic with it all done. Should be back together again next month…

Not really for sale but I’d entertain offers around the appraised value  ;)

Love the small details you paid attention to! Beautifuly one 230! Way more "Pagodish" than a 280. With all the chrom, etc. If interieur is made at same level... ;)

This is my 64 230SL, all matching numbers, high end restoration. I am selling it as I have bought a very early one. VIN Nr 000063! which I intend to restore.

I'd love to buy it but don't have that sort of money lying around right now! Where did you have the work done? Finland? Riga? Poland?

Thanks Peter. It’s done in Finland. Chrome and couple other bits are done elsewhere.

I love the 230SL's. Beauty and simplicity. I have a 65 4-speed and I don't see any difference in performance between the 230SL and the 280SL.

As they say, the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but yes, I do also like the 230 but wouldn’t mind a 280 either  ;)

Way to go Pete and Sead. Both restorations are top drawer and reflected by the appraisal.

In terms of originality that can be very elusive.  Some parts are NLA but many that are available have slight differences.  In terms of finish materials, I feel that the best that can be done is to approximate what was there originally.  MBTex, leather and especially carpets all are different than what went into our cars from the factory.  From what I can see, these two cars have been restored to a faithful level based on what materials are available today.  I don’t think you can do much better than that!

Thank you Chris, Aslam, Dirk and Len  :)

As you said Len, originality for sure can be elusive and not only because NLA parts and differences in new materials but it seems also there were deviations in assembly just depending who did it or what kind of hose clamp happened to be in the stock that month  :D
