Fuel pump rebuilt...now binding
« on: August 26, 2023, 21:36:08 »
I just re-sealed my Pagoda short fuel pump this week.  While replacing the spacers on the top half of the shaft I found it pretty difficult to expose the groove for the circle clip to hold it all together.  I had to press down hard to make room for it to clip in there.  But it turned freely, but it took more effort to turn it with my hands.  I hooked it up to a 12v power supply and it ran.

I installed it and it started right up, albeit it ran rough for about 3 or 4 minutes and then settled down.  I goosed it a few time and the throttle responded as usual.  However, when I left it running, about 4 minutes later it died out and would not restart again.  Not even a cough.  Found out the #4 fuse had blown.  When I replaced it, it blew again when I cranked it.

When I attached the two wires to the pump I could not remember which color was positive.  One wire was dark and the other very light.  No stripes on either wire, so I hooked the light wire to the positive side.  I'm assuming that since it ran for a few minutes that the wires are connected properly?

I also cracked the bleed screw and fuel was coming out.  Any

Could the shaft be binding since it was so hard to attach the circle clip?  Should I remove one of the washers?

Thanks for any advice.

Do you have a meter to check the polarity of the wires?

I’d try loosening up the bottom plate to see if the pump turns easier.

Were the spacers the exact same spacers?

Did you replace anything? What exactly did you do to the pump?  Does the shaft have any in and out play after the housing is put together (without the rotor cover plate installation)?

There is a video on YouTube on how to rebuild the pump. Not sure the link.

I would check to see where the brushes are hitting the commutator(copper bars around the bottom of the armature) was there a groove ( I am assuming you did not rewind the armature)  and if a groove is there are the brushes still in that groove?

First, thank you all for your advice!

* Polarity is correct.

* Yes, the spacers are the same and correctly placed on the proper side of the circlip.

* I did loosen the bottom plate but it made no difference.

* However, I DID forget to pull the brushes apart to remove the armature the first time I took I took it apart.  It bumped the brushes and then I realized my mistake and did it correctly.

* I finally took it to a small alternator/starter repair shop and he told me the armature is rubbing against to lower part of the magnets in the housing.  I have no idea why that is because it ran smoothly and quietly up until the leaking.   He suggested sanding down the place where it rubbed, but that did not sound like the thing to do.  He also said the brushes were in good shape.

Question- could my bumping the brushed when disassembling have cause any problems like the armature rubbing against the magnets at he bottom?

Question - in the event I cannot get this going again, can anyone recommend an aftermarket pump and are there any that would just bolt up using the same hardware?

Many thanks~

Kev, I bought Kent Bergma's rebuild kit and have watched his videos.  VERY helpful and probably the only reason I tackled the job in the first place.  Thanks.
