1964 230SL owners manual question
« on: September 17, 2023, 15:01:18 »
I have searched the forum but couldn't find an answer....does anyone know if a 1964 230SL owners manual shows the spare wheel vertically? I've been searching for an owners manual and want to ensure I purchase the correct one. The ones I've seen show the spare wheel laying horizontal which I don't think would be correct for my car.

Also, if someone has a 1964 230SL owners manual for sale please PM me.

Respectfully,

Brandon

Logic says that there must be original early owners manuals showing the vertical spare tire.  Reprints are probably all horizontal spare.  This is all conjecture on my part, maybe I shouldn't have even posted.   ::)

I checked my library of stuff, and to my surprise found that I had picked up the first year 230 SL Owner's Manual. This manual is part 113 584 01 96, which I take to be the first version - the "01". There is no picture of the spare tire mounted at all, either vertically or horizontally. The next manual I have is for the 250 SL, 113 584 08 96. This manual does have a drawing of the spare tire and it is shown as horizontal as is correct for the 250 SL and 280 SL. (and later 230 SLs). I am assuming that there were manuals numbered "02" through "07" for the 230 SL, but have no data or examples to support that.

There has been discussion on the forum about the owner's manual numbering.
Here is one thread https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=31601.msg229195#msg229195
It includes a reference from MBPaul, who is the original owner of a 1966 230 SL that came with the 113 584 01 96 manual

Note - the spare tire was changed in the 1964 run, VIN ending in 6069 was the trial car, then put in production at VIN ending 7205 except for 7216, 7232, 7253, 7277 - as noted in the change list from Mercedes Collector and published in Pagoda Notes Vol 10 no 1.

There are a number of changes made during the 230 SL, so there may have been updates to the Owner's Manual to reflect those.

When looking for an owner's manual, the early manuals, at least through the 250 SL, if original will show the dash and instrument panel in full color. The reprints are usually in the same blue print as text.

Dear Brandon,

For the 230 SL owners manual, there are basically three editions available.
Edition A
Edition B
and
Edition C,
all of these as single language (German) or two languages only (Deutsch-English) or Nordic (German, English and 2 more languages) or as specific Country editions (French, Italian ....)

My Edition C says something like V.66 (= May 1966).

For your 1964 230 SL
Edition A (the 113 584 01 96 cited above) is the correct one.

113 584 01 96 is the number on the owners manual that came with my car when it was delivered to me in February 1966 (it was made in August or September 1965).  It is actually a 5 language manual.  I cannot find anything that says what edition it is.  Also, it does not have a lot a pictures; mostly drawings.  And I cannot find anything showing the inside of the trunk that would show either a vertical or horizontal spare tire.

Does anyone have a 230SL owners manual "edition A' that they would like to sell?

I have been looking online for quite some time and can't seem to find one. Thanks in advance.

There are at least a couple on ebay right now, but not cheap by any means

Item - 225923861198
Item - 225923863577

Both listed at $265 or Make Offer, have been listed since Dec last year

Item - 364522056193 Listed at $365  Listed since Oct 23

I have a saved search on eBay for manuals across all 113 models. I limited it to 230SL this morning, and there were at least a dozen in different condition ranging from $60 (new reprint) to $600+

Most were Edition A

I have an Edition A and an Edition C. Both came with my 65 230SL. The car has extensive manuals and dealer brochures. On page 54 of Edition C, under tire change, there is a picture of the horizontal spare, in the trunk. On the Edition A, under tire change, there is no picture of the vertical spare in the trunk. Actually, there are no pics of the trunk area anywhere in the Edition A manual that I have.

I'm not sure when they switched from manual A, to B, to C. Does anyone know when Edition A was replaced with B, and B with C?
