Another 5 speed source
« on: October 17, 2023, 00:24:37 »
Just saw this add in a classic car magazine that arrived today.  They use a new Tremec 5.  Their site says prices start at $5,700.

I believe AlexD has had this kit installed in his car, which is finishing repair now.

Definitely cheaper than the 6-speed kit, but probably still a little more money than finding a Getrag 265 (w/mech speedo) and sourcing the kit in Germany (which can be tricky).

not sure how strong a Tremec T5 is, but I'm sure 170HP, it's not going to break it.

And what's the cost of changing the differential gears (or whole rear axle) to a better ratio?  If you already have rear disk brakes, I would think a 3.27:1 ratio in a sedan axle would be the most economical upgrade.  Might even get you to use first gear in an automatic!   ;D

There are hundreds of thousand Fords with a T5, including 87-93 Foxbody Mustangs.

I did the diff change on mine and it can be a bit sluggish pulling away sometimes but Imo still well worth while doing.

I have often wondered if their is a way of making the car pull away in first every time ?, mine does it sometimes anyway without selecting first and feels so much better.

What is it that changes, intermittently, on mine.

T-5 is the preferred tranny in the fast Ford community, where massaged engines can put out 3-400 ponies.

Ray,

A question that probably deserves it's own discussion thread.  I recommend you start a new thread in the drivetrain forum instead of redirecting discussion here in a 5-speed conversion discussion in the commercial advertising forum.

A word of advice for anybody ordering this kit from these people, or any similar kit from similar people. Ensure 100% of the kit is shipped, all at the same time. No backordered or missing items. Even on a kit costing nearly $6000 there could be a $5 part missing that prevents you from installing it. You must reiterate to the supplier that they ship everything or nothing. You may get caught holding thousands of dollars of kit you cannot install, waiting on some part...

I have a Getrag 5 speed (with mechanical speedo drive) which has been reconditioned for sale and a lot less expensive than the Tremec.

Gordon, the moderators will probably remove your post. First it should be in its own topic, and second, our forum rules state you must list a price with with your listing.

No offense at all. Just make a separate listing for your item for sale with the price. You are more likely to get some interest that way, it's to your benefit. Unless you do sell transmissions or kits professionally, it would be a posting in the FOR SALE forum. the COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING forum is for those members who are listed as business entities, or when your fellow members find something commercially listed somewhere, such as the initial listing here, a car for sale at a dealer, etc.

There's probably more than a few members who cannot deal with a $6,000 price tag, and yet want a 5-speed. So, post what you have and see what comes of it.
