temperture sender locations
« on: October 24, 2023, 16:04:27 »
Hello enclosing some pictures ,and need help whereto instal the Capilary tube from the center clusters temp gauge
Have a few possible locations ,and maybe someone knows where  these ports on the engine ar for . they have what seems to be a electrical sensor s screwed in now . Please look at the pictures and hep me where they are
The pictures of the 280 on the stand is from a 1970, the pictures on installed clean motor is a 1969
The pictures   are pointing to locations on where maybe he capillary tube might mount to , but does not reach to passenger side in front of starter
and the sensors the have a electrical connection , does anyone know where they might hook up ?  thanks ed burak

I think it goes into the head next to a spark plug.  Not into the block.  Surprisingly, the Tech Manual doesn't show the connection to the engine.  I searched on "capillary" and found 25 discussion threads, but none had pictures!!

I have a temp pod on the left of the engine of my 280SL April 1969 with the temp gauge sensor and the temp sensor for the engine.

Hello, as Peter says, there's a pod where the temperature sender fits, next to the thermo time switch, which has the electrical connections, going to the cold start relay.  Later engines did away with the pod and both units fitted directly into the head

There's a picture on the post below, and in the tech manual, next to the thermo time switch

Edward,

What engine (or maybe, what specific engine number) do you have?  As said by Bob, at some point this device relocated from the pod to the head.

The lower temperature sensor is used for the emissions reduction system. This was put in place in July 1969 for the 1970 model year. The temperature sensor for the gauge (the capillary tube) as now at the rear of the head.

The switch for 1970 was at VIN ending 11948.

The emissions reduction systems changes are note in the list of changes for the 280 SL reported in Pagoda World 25 - the reference document is the Engelen book.
