Power steering reservoir filters
« on: December 16, 2023, 01:06:27 »
When I disassembled the reservoir today, I found two filters in it. Isn't there supposed to be only one? What is the correct order of assembly for the baffle plate, is the plate suppose be on top of the filter, because the baffle plate was under the filter, and it looked like it was interfering with the flow.

We (Vickers) supplied the filter for the reservoir. During my time, it was a one-piece filter. I have one somewhere and will take a picture later today.

CJ: Here are some pics of the filter. Not sure whether the p/n that Pawel lists will give you this. I am using these in my 280SL.

I recall on my 230SL it works like in the diagram above.  You drop in the cylindrical filter, drop the plate on top of it and the other parts, and the lid holds it all down tight.

Those are for later cars. Some will interchange with the ring type filter but not the 113 system.

Hi,
in contrast to the newer paper filters the old filters could be washed out.

I bought it a year or two ago and what you get from Mercedes is exactly what WRe is showing - hard pumice (or whatever the word is), a spongy stone material.

Not sure what this exactly means, but I am using these in my 1971 280SL and they work fine. The funny thing is, the filter "filters" the fluid coming from the return line into the reservoir, not from the reservoir going into the pump.

Hi Mike,
if you look in the Mann filter catalog, you will find the H85 paper filter you use in the later models.
