Piston Rings
« on: December 28, 2023, 15:49:54 »
My engine (127981 10 005407) was overhauled in 1978, 6 Pistons (127 030 86 17) were replaced, these pistons were the 3rd repair, the only pistons available at that time. My engine needs a cylinder sleeved, don't ask why. The Classic Center said Piston Ring sets are only sold with the Piston. Is that true?

Also does anyone have the connecting rod and crankshaft bearing number, to compare with the invoices from 1978.

I needed a set of rings recently. The only way to get them was to buy the pistons and rings from the Classic Center or a MB dealer.

Adsit told me they could supply custom made rings however the lead time was long. I decided against it.

At Mercedes dealers, including VAT 23%, so it is gross price for end user, to het the price for the shop, divide amount by 1,23. FX used 3,92 PLN for 1USD.

Connecting rod A 127 030 01 20 ca $395

Connecting rod bearings, parts kit, nominal 48mm A 127 030 00 60 new number with 26 at the end, ca $595

Connecting rod bearings, repair kit, A 127 586 01 03, replaced by A 127 030 01 60 1st repair size 47,75mm A 127 038 07 10, replaced by A 127 030 01 60, $576

I think the next one, the description is not there was A 127 038 07 10 replaced with A 127 030 02 60 and A 127 038 07 10, similar price.

I do not see any rings for 127981, I see only rings for 127982 and 127 984, parts kit A 000 030 41 24, for about $100. No information if they go only with pistons. This does not mean that Classic Center are wrong. Maybe that is why there is no information about rings for 127 981.

Piston A 127 030 86 17 is there, $521, 83mm, 1st repair size. It also says:    Up to engine: 981 10/50,20/60 009301 981 12/52,22/62 002357, which is for your engine. There is no information if it comes with rings. But I would not be surprised if it does as rings themselves are not available.

I needed rings for a 250 engine.

This is quite a bit easier as there was only one piston used on 250SL/SE.

230SL's used three different pistons and I would avoid the late version because you would likely receive a stepped piston which is a low compression version. At best, you would be lucky to produce 150 PSI compression with that choice.

280SL's often have stepped pistons which I avoid at all costs. Compression is where you make HP on our engines.

Rings are available from various sources. Hastings, Deves, and others. I use MB or Malhe pistons but I have had to use custom made ones a few times.

I needed 82.5mm rings. Those were not available from anyone off the shelf. I should have been more specific.

For 82.5mm piston, here is your part number for pistons:

Up to engine: 981 10/50,20/60 009301 981 12/52,22/62 002357

A 127 030 85 17 PISTON 82.50-MM CYLINDER BORE;REPAIR SIZE I, $521

You would have to check if it comes with rings. There are no prices of rings anywhere there, it is fairly likely they come with pistons, but I am not sure.

The piston rings numbers are, I think:

A 005 037 99 16, A 006 037 03 16, A 006 037 07 16, A 002 037 95 18, availability unknown.

And repair kit, I think, is A 001 586 47 03, replacing A 000 586 46 03.

I am saying "I think" as there is no direct reference to the repair size next to part numbers.

Thanks for the information. As I said I was looking for 82.5mm rings alone and couldn't find any so I bought pistons and rings from MB.

I have accumulated over the years huge box of NOS piston rings mostly originals still in packages. If you send me the the bore size and the thickness of each ring needed, I'll check for you. Also I agree with Dan, Hastings or Deves most likely have the ones you need. I prefer the Deves brand over the Hastings.

I removed 1 Piston, the number stamped on the top is 82.97, I assume it is the 3rd repair 83.00mm. I will search for 6 ring sets, as long as the #5 cylinder needs a sleeve, all rings should be replaced, with the connecting rod and crank bearings. Thanks for all the info.

Good News Guys, I contacted Mahle North America....ordered 1 83mm Piston, and 6 Ring Sets from Germany, price was more than reasonable. I also learned that there is a wealth of information stamped on the top of the Piston and casted inside of a Piston, FYI.
