Door Panel
« on: January 24, 2024, 20:25:19 »
So I have begun replacing all the interior MBTex.  What a nightmare.  I dont think I am ever going to get all the glue off of everything!

But I am on the Door Panel, thought they would be easy... but turning out to be the hardest part!  One question... Should these Door Panels be FLAT?  mine are bowed in areas and not exactly flat.  I wondering if I should heat them up a little and flatten them?  They seem to be some sort of Platic/Fiber Glass material.  So I am sure I could flatten them?  They both seem to be distorted in the same way so just checking before I screw something up...
Thanks
A

*also strange side note. I cannot post Jpgs anymore?

They are/should be flat.
I would buy new ones.

Attached jpg of my door panel to test EDIT: attachment worked no problem

Keep in mind the restrictions for attachments

Restrictions: 4 per post, maximum total size 32768KB, maximum individual size 8192KB

The door cards were pressed hardboard.  They typically get wet and warp or disintegrate
If yours are more like plastic/fiberglass, perhaps yours were replaced previously?

hmm.  I will pick dig farther in.  Maybe it is just something on them that are making them look like plastic.  I will try to flatten first then buy if they dont work out.
Thanks for the info.

ok yea looks like cardboard but it is painted black on one side and with some sort glossy paint on the other side... I will take apart the other one and see if they match.

The number on the panel (535) is probably on other trim pieces in the car...  Should be an original panel then.

Did you read this?

Don't forget the vapour barrier, could be why the card has warped if it's been exposed to any moisture

Hey BobH.  Yes I saw that before I started to take them apart but great to review again while trying to put it all back together.  I dont see any Vapor Barrier?
Also I will keep searching for more tips on the forum.  I am definitely struggling with some of the piece and stretching the MBtex on the curves.  I sort get as much glued down to each piece and I am saving all the curves for 1 day.  Maybe I will find a trick to getting them to attach without wrinkles.  I assume it is just a stretching exercise with maybe a little heat or something.
Thanks for the post..

Also I have given up trying to find staples as short as they used.  Every place I have been has never seen anything like it.  So I guess it is just glue these days.

Lorsar thanks for the image info.  I guess even though I was shrinking the full res images I left the sizes too big.  So I scaled the last set and it is all working again!
Thanks

First pic in this thread:
https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=27653

It is applied to the door before placing the card/panel back on.

What size staples are you looking for?  Do you have a hand stapler or an air stapler?

Oh yes the plastic on the door.  I will definitely replace.  Thought maybe I missed something on the actual panel...

Jordan, yes I have both types of staplers just cannot find a 1/8 inch staple, crazy how short the legs are on the staple, long enough to go thru the MBtex but short enough not to come out of the other side of the board.  Must be while they put like 1000 in when the stapled it.

Also 1 of my doors is missing the plastic.  Anyone find a good replacement on Amazon?  I assume this is probably not something I need to get from Mercedes....

Unreal.  I have googled this and Amazon over and over again and nothing comes up.  I put in Spotnails into Amazon and they did not come up.  I put in the Stock Number and BOOM amazon found them. 10,000 coming my way.. Thank you!

Glad I could help.  You may also want to order a box of 3/16".  They are Stock #87003 I believe.  I ordered a number of different lengths just so I would have them when needed.
