Classic Cars (Off Topic??)
« on: July 22, 2005, 18:13:37 »
Gents,

Now it may appear that the good Dr., Dan Caron, and I disagree on some things, but we really are good friends!  He has his ideas of classic cars, and I have mine.  I contend my 280SL is a classic in every sense of the word.  The good Dr. does not.  So be it.  (N.B. I was proud when my car was invited to this prestigious show last year, but extremely humbled in the presence of cars like this) But, one thing we are in very serious agreement on is very serious classic cars, of which there can be no argument.  To that end, Dan asked me to post a few of these pictures of what he considers true classic cars.  I have no arguments; and you shouldn't either.  Enjoy! :

Oh, and if these kinds of cars whet your whistle, so to speak, they will be on display (with 175+ additional) at the Concours at Cranbrook, this Sunday.  You don't need to be a big shot to come, all you need is $25--and it is a charitable event.  More info at www.concoursatcranbrook.com

OOOOooooooooo............ I want an L29 Cord. Man, what a car! Pictures do these things little justice. They really are something to see - and that many in one place is overload.

Go to the 190SL Group site and find '' Tom's trip out west. '' You will see a number of pictures from the trip Tom Hamilton and myself took in the spring of 2001. We stopped in St. Louis at the late Fred Kemp's house and we took his 500K special roadster out for a drive. In one of the pictures I have my foot stuck between the seat and the door opening. Very little rooom inside of the car.

Yeah, that's me. I was in a whole lot of pain at that point the picture was taken. I couldn't get my foot out - it was very much stuck in there. Couldn't move it forward or back into the car.
I think I removed my shoe lace to free my foot. Pretty strange thing to have happen but the picutre shows it.
This was a remarkable car. The detail was unbelievable and even the head light glass had Benz stars etched ( probably by sand blasting ) on the insides so that you looked through the glass and could see the star.
It drove like a truck though. Very loud with a rather crude shifter and steering that took all the drivers strenght to turn the car around. 50 MPH would be scary in this car.

In all fairness though, this was it's first trip on public roads, the driver wasn't used to the car and driving something worth 3 or 4 million probably made him feel nervous. It probably needed some driving time to sort out a few details. The engine ran perfectltly - all ( straight ) 8 cylinders. It was a rare opertunity that I owe Tom a lot for.
Fred Kemp was a great guy that's very much missed I'm sure.
