Mercedes-Benz advertises the Pagoda!
« on: June 02, 2003, 11:55:32 »
Last issue (June 2003) of the British classic car magazine "Classic & Sports Car" includes this official Mercedes-Benz advertisement about the Pagoda. This ad is also in the last issue of the quarterly German magazine "Stars & Cars (Powered by Mercedes-Benz)", about racing Mercedes cars of all ages...
Even with a noticeable mistake [:0] (the car of the picture is not a 230 SL, it's a 280 SL!), it's a very nice ad   :)   Thanks MB!
Regards,

Albert and Doug:
For those who might not be experts, how are you so sure it's a 280 SL and not a 230 SL??? Headrest? (could have been added to a 230SL?), wheels? or what?

the car has 280 SL outside mirrors & hubcaps, but the real reason i think it's a 280 SL is because i think i know that car & perhaps even that shot.
i believe it's the same car they used in the "classic, classic, classic, classic, future classic" ad that showed all the SLs over the years.
the ad has the look of a stock shot taken from the archives, not a special photo done for the particular ad, so i'd be willing to guess it's the same car regardless of whether it's a different shot or not.
i'm no achim ahlert on these matters. and on that note, i'd like to ask others if there's a visible difference in the outside door handles. i know the handles are different between 230 & 280 SLs, but is it detectable from the outside?

Hi Richard,
Yes, the two main clues are the "one piece" hubcaps (only 280 SL came with these hubcaps), and the outside mirrors (only 280 SL and 250 SL from VIN 2980 came with these mirrors)... and this car is supossed to be original...
This Pagoda has the early style of tail lights (as in the 230/250 SL), but all 280 SL up to VIN 7937 also came with these tail lights, so it should be a 280 SL previous to VIN 7938.
