Author Topic: funny issue running after sitting for 24 hours (INJECTION PUMP?)  (Read 601 times)

I have a 230 sl which has an R11 pump and is initially presenting as a cold start issue first start of the day is a little slow to get going and will predictably run for 2 seconds first crank, the proceed to die and on second crank will run beautifully and go through the full warm up cycle without hesitation. after testing every piece of the cold start system nothing seems to be at fault I even checked my fuel pump check valves which seem to be in working order as it seemed to be a fuel delivery issue, the caveat to the story is the longer it sits the worse the start up becomes, after a weekend it will run on 3-4 cylinders and die multiple times until finally finding a happy running condition. I am suspicious of the injection pump itself and the possibility of fuel in the injection lines dissipating into the oil system however I cannot smell fuel in the oil so hesitant to condemn the pump.

any info tips or tests to confirm a leaky pump or knowledge on the typical conditions of the pump and injection lines at rest is greatly appreciated. I am rather versed in Mercedes Benz cars so don't be afraid to lay it all out!

Agree it sounds like a fuel delivery issue, speficially fuel 'leaking back' out of the lines. You say you checked the fuel pump (I assume you mean fuel injection pump) check valves, but are you sure they keep the lines pressurized with fuel to the injectors for days?

I appreciate your input I feel very vindicated now, as fuel does not stay in the injector lines longer than 24 hours but I cannot discover the smoking gun of where it is going. I have put dye in the gas tank looking for fuel in the oil section of the injection pump and saw no sign of dye. secondly, I have removed injectors and looked for leaks on a bench tester which also all 6 passed with flying colors I came to the same conclusion and agree the pump seems to be leaking back but can't find where or how. pump was also "rebuilt" recently.

On top of the pump there is a one way valve. 22mm wrench gets it off of fuel pump. It only should open in one direction, sometimes it may get stuck open if there us debris in the fuel that jams it. ( you can blow through it off of the pump and air should only travel in one direction(up when on the pump). Bob
