Missing Chrome?
« on: May 21, 2024, 16:08:24 »
Hi,
So after getting it all back together I have a gap on the Frame of the car at the door.  I found my original picture and there is a gap there too.  Anyone have a picture of how this should look? I have found a few that show the Dash piece covering it but mine did not fit that way.  Also am I missing a piece of chrome that would cover this or is it just supposed to be painted?  This pic is the original, I will post what it looks like also when I find that picture...

Here is what mine looks like, along with the inner piece.

This is the original set up on a 280 SL with leather interior.

Here is another shot with door open.

For some reason I was not able to post both photos in the same message...?

ok thanks.  Interesting.  I have the bottom piece of chrome but not the top one.  Stange it was not on either side.  I will begin searching!

You will need the wind lace that goes under those chrome pieces unless you already have them.

I do not think you are missing any chrome piece. I think there is no other chrome trim piece than what you have.

I think what you see on the original picture is corner of the dash trim that is falling apart and is provisionally fixed. BTW: there should be no rivet nor screw holding the side leather trim piece, just cardboard.

Ah yes when looking at the pics again.  There is no other piece the one I was seeing was on the door.  Looks like your Dash Piece just fits the area better than mine and it is the same on both sides.  That was as low as I could get it and that was even difficult.  And when I look at the original pictures the gap was there.  I guess I will wrap around that join of the metal and tuck it under the crome and see if that works.  But it definitely feels wrong because the screws are poking thru from the chrome piece.  I think it should be covered by the dash piece.  Hmm.  I will search more and then maybe take the pieces of again at some point and see if they can go lower.

Sorry to jump back into this one.  But since having this issue I have scoured the internet and searched for pictures of this section of the car.  Every single one I see the Dash Piece goes all the way down to the frame, no gap like I have on my car.  I also don't see any screws holding in the piece like I have.  But the other thing is that I think 100% of the cars I have seen are Leather?  Would MBTex be any different?  Does anyone know where I can find some good pics of a 1966 with MBTex to see what it was.  I am the 2nd owner of this car and it sat with the first owner garaged most of its life.  I don't see why they would have changed anything like a dash piece like that?  Shrinkage?  I saved all the only mb text so I am going to pull it out and see if I can see anything.

More internet searching I found this 66.  It looks like it has a screw in it like mine...

I would suggest Bring-a-Trailer. They keep quite an archive of all their cars with LOTS of photos. I think you might be able to find what you are looking for, but I still believe none of the cars had a screw holding in that small piece.

Here is one I found in MB Tex and does not have a screw.

Look at photo 115

Here is another

Photo 65 (not terribly clear, but I don't see the screw)

I am sure there are others, they keep a pretty good amount of past sales.

Arghh.  Thanks for the pics.  Brad is yours MBtex?  Is it original or been restored?  Mine is vin 12150 so very close to yours.  I think mine came off the like in 1965.
Thanks

I have recently done those two corners of my dash albeit in leather but doing it in either MB Tex or leather, should be the same.

My dash corners had excess material that wasn’t glued to the triangular piece that has the screw in it.

The dash piece was placed in position and the excess material was lifted up out of the way for the screw to be fitted to hold the dash piece. The leather or MB Tex is glued over the top of the screw,  stretched and gets fitted underneath the piece of chrome that goes down the lower part of the A pillar (S shaped piece). Both this leather piece and the windlace get fitted underneath that chrome piece so both ends of the leather/MB Tex are hidden.

I’ve attached a pic of me pulling the leather over to show you what I mean.

When I purchased my car, there were pieces of tissue box cardboard covered in vinyl in each of these corners. Definitely not correct, never mind the fact the dash had been vinyl painted black when it should be blue.

I’ve asked a similar question of the forum a while back so you should find some other pics on that post. When I find it, I’ll reply with it here.
