Power Steering Leak
« on: May 31, 2024, 19:33:28 »
So I suddenly am leaking some power steering fluid.  I noticed it a few weeks ago.  There was fluid all over the place. So I cleaned it all up hoping to find where it is coming from.  After a little driving this is the only place I see it? On top of the cap... Is it possibly coming out of these tiny vent holes on the top?   Is that normal?

**Moving this Dipstick to a separate question....

System ran low and started drawing in air which made it foam up and purge fluid out. Refill canister and purge air out of the fluid without engine running. Instructions are on this site.

Did you check/clean/change the filter inside the oil reservoir? If the filter is clogged, the pump does not suck enough oil and is starts foaming.

So started her up with the Reservoir open and bubbled and foamed up like crazy.  So heading to Ace to get a 1/4Tube.  So this is probably stupid question but I Put the tube on the nipple and the unscrew the nut on the nipple?  Or is there another part I need to unscrew to get it to Bleed?

Raise the front of your car until the wheels are off the ground.  Turn your steering wheel back and forth and keep adding ATF as the fluid goes down in the canister. Do NOT run your engine or the fluid will foam up.

Once you quit seeing air bubbles in the fluid, turn your steering wheel full lock in both directions which should produce a few more bubble. Fill to the line on your canister housing only when you're sure all of the air has been purged out. This method is, by far, the best way to do this.

Arggg.  Well I could not get the damn bleed nipple to turn.  But while turning the wheels and watching all the bubbles come out I realize the bleeding would not matter.  I am leaking from the spot in the picture.  I will dive in to what this is and see if it is something I can replace or need to take in.  I hope I can do it.  I am guess it it is A,B and C in that drawing in the tech manual.  Anyone know that gasket I am going to need to get?
Oof reading more if that is it then I dont think I can do it unless I get a torque gauge...

No need to open a 'bleed nipple', the bleeding is done as per Benz Dr Dan's instructions. But, you appear to have a leaking steering box. First time I can remember in the past 22 years on this forum! You may want to call around to a couple of the parts suppliers for a rebuild kit, I reckon they don't get this request very often.

Hi ACbrock   Here is what i did to adjust the torque after refurbishing the steering box: a dynamometer and a straight bar . The repair kit for the box is a pain.... to fit ... almost the metal balls ( 35)

ok so seeing that this is a much bigger task than just replacing a gasket.  I cleaned it all up and and Bled the system and we will just keep an eye on it for awhile.  Thanks for the help!
