1971 280sl - electric sunroof
« on: July 06, 2024, 21:14:47 »
Broadarrow is offering a 280sl with an electric sunroof at their Monterrey auction.  If anyone is attending, it would be interesting to get some better pictures of the sunroof and its motor.

Phenomenal Golde sunroof, so seamless, so factory rare. I'd love to have one of them!!

Barney Ruprecht of Hagerty Auctions replied to my questions, and said to go ahead and post the answers.

"Dear Charles,

I wanted to follow up regarding the hardtop sunroof mechanism.

The switch to operate the sunroof is in the center console controls. The motor is up in the roof front center. The motor leads unplug right behind the drivers seat below the roof latch along with the rear window defroster wires.

In the below link I have added some pictures of things up close along with a video showing it opening and closing."

And here is the link:

A very nice piece of work.

Cheers,

Wow very well done. impeccable fit and finish. The hidden motor is very discrete too.
Certainly unique. Was Golde the aftermarket supplier / installer ?

This car sold last night, hammer price was 101K.  I would say someone got a bargain.

I struggle with the weight of my roof as it is.  I can only imagine how much more
cumbersome this roof would be!

Len,

If you can afford to put a sliding sunroof in a removable roof (because you work for the Department of Redundancy Department), then you can afford to have someone install a nice electric hoist. Or, just hire people to mount, dismount your removable roof seasonally.

Department of Redundancy Department
😀
Yes a sunroof hardtop seems somewhat redundant would be great all the same. I should have looked for one when I lived in LA. You can find everything you never knew you needed in LA.

For those of us with a California Coupe, it could make sense.
