4 years no start- loud at start up
« on: July 12, 2024, 03:16:35 »
This is my first Mercedes I’m more an American v8 guy but got my grandmas Mercedes last night! Today i redid all the fuel hoses as they were junk. Worked up to starting it after sitting 4 years (brakes went out) and I’m hearing what i feel as loud lifter tick (again I’m a v8 guy i know no lifters here) that i don’t remember being as loud when i used to drive it years and years ago.

And ideas? No smoke out tail pipe, should i try to let it warm up w the new oil change?? Should i go and adjust the valves? Hope to have some ideas!

That does sound rather loud. I would check the valve clearances, and also whether anything seems amiss under the valve cover. Also, turn the engine over by hand and see if anything external is causing that sound. Lastly, check the exhaust manifolds; sometimes a loose connection can sound like that.

First thing to do is pull the valve cover off and take a look.

Sounds like the chain tensioner might be collapsed. It pumps up hydraulically from oil pressure. It might be stuck from the long storage. I like "sticks" idea about removing the cam cover to check on things!

How would i test this? Pulled cover today everything looks pretty normal but it does seem like might be a lose chain

Ok found timing chain info in the members guide! Will try at lunch.

Using resources you have access to as a full Member:
https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Engine/TimingChain

You can search the forum using the Search function. If you key "Chain tensioner" (with parenthesis), you will get a lot of hits, among them this one:

Thank you!

I was able to pull out the tensioner today and pull it apart. Was completely stuck. Now my next issue is the tensioner sprocket arm doesn’t move either. Frozen. Any ideas here? Thinking pulling the sprocket and cleaning it too.

I should be good to pull the pin and remove then put back without it slipping a tooth right?

Try to use some penetrant and exercise it.

So i can get the tensioner arm to move in and out now (to the spring) but cannot get it to move up and down. Tried penetrant and also sticking screwdriver in to press the arm and can’t get it to move at all. Something I’m doing wrong?

Front what i can tell it’s not moving the chain at all cause it’s not moving on its fulcrum. Not sure best way to describe it

Is the timing chain holding it down? If so back the cam off a bit. Be careful not to jump timing. You can temporarily, use some heavy plastic wire ties through the sprocket holes to secure the chain to the sprocket.

I’ll try that tomorrow, i don’t think it was holding it down at all. I did try starting again after the tensioner was replaced and still same thing no movement from the tensioner sprocket or tensioner arm. If i put the tensioner in it had no movent at all either. Will timing be pulled out if i remove that sprocket? Looks like i can pull it w a 6mm bolt from what im seeing. I guess i could also lock in the timing with a zip tie pull it and the replace and check it’s still on same spot?  I’m not wanting to spend all the time redoing timing in chain since it’s so hard with the hood in way 😂

Yes, you can pull the threaded pin out of the head to remove the sprocket assembly. Be very careful not to drop the spring down into the chain gallery. As you pull the pin the spring will become loose to fall into the engine.

Was able to move the cam sprocket enough it losened up and was able to bleed the tensioner!

Also found out the bigger reason for the noise- fan was hitting the shroud.

Next is fix a fuel leak, redo the vacuum and coolant lines, and hopefully she’ll be purring soon. Thank y’all for the help!
