Installing 1123330165 rubber bumbers problems 220Sb
« on: August 12, 2024, 19:57:45 »
I have been trying without success to install these bumpers on the front suspension.  I tried the string method with great failure.  I cannot get bumper to seat in the hole.  The one I'm currently fighting with is the passenger side rear bumper on the front suspension.  These are identical to the ones on the 230SL.

Still no luck at putting in these bumpers.  As frustrated as I am now I could just sell both cars.  I just can't crawl around under these cars anymore and is just not fun.  If anyone has any advice on these bumpers help me change my mind.

Hi Brad,

Sorry to hear about the frustration you are experiencing. I have no idea of how to assist with installing these, hope some of the experienced mechanics (Joe A, Colin F, Dan C, Chuck T) will give you a few pointers so that you can get these installed and keep your lovely cars.

Regards
Andrew

Hi Brad,
How about “sharpening” the foot of the rubber bump stop. Carefully trim the food on a bench grinder, into an arrow head shape. Put rubber grease on the sharpened foot and put the rubber in position. Now fill the space between the rubber buffer and the suspension cradle with wooden blocks whilst holding the buffer in position and with a little tention on the string, you mentioned before.
Now jack up the suspension on that side. The rubber bump stop will now be squeezed between the wooden blocks and the suspension.
The rubber grease, pressure from above and pulling on the string, might help the foot of the rubber bump stop to slip into place.

Here is the problem...  When placing it into position it keeps falling over.  If you remove the wheel the bumper will not fit in the opening.  The car must be on the weight of the suspension to fit in.  While placing the bumper in place you have to reach behind the wheel and slide it into place. Then you cannot see the hole without using a mirror and a flashlight.  If it does get over the hole you need to lift the car with a jack while keeping it in line with the hole at which time it falls over sideways and you have to start over.  I did put dish soap on it to help it slide in.  I had my wife lift and lower the car to help wedge it into place while positioning it.  I tried a glue gun by attaching a stiff piece of plastic to it to hold it in place while positioning it and it still falls over when loading the weight to push it in.

I bought these plyers today at harbor freight and got it put in in 5 minutes.  Of course I had 6 hours of practice at doing it wrong.  I managed to hold it in place with the lower end started in the oval slot.  Slowly jacked the car a little at a time as the control arm loaded weight and forced it in the hole.
