During your “hiatus” Bob, some of this was discussed prior. I think the reality is very few people have the originals for one reason or another, and most people have the rounded style whether they are Mercedes or aftermarket. One of our members, the late Hauser, who passed away a couple of years back, actually went through the effort of having a set made with the more original squared off ends. If you have the originals and they’re in good shape, treasure them!

I have seen the ones on the Porsche site (don't have a link though) - I think the end that slips onto the exhaust pipe is different vs the 113 unit.

One of the big Porsche suppliers is Stoddard (stoddard.com)

I recall it was not an obvious search.

I just tried "Exhaust tip" - no luck at Stoddard.

I have a set of "square" ends purchased from Pelican Parts costing $139.34.  Apparently a Porsche tip for 356 equipped with Sport Muffler.  Look, fit and easy to install.  The hardest part was to remove the existing exhaust tips.  Pix if wanted

They fit just fine, I put them on mine.  On Stoddard, search SPORT EXHAUST  you'll see for 356

Bob, this thread discusses the square tips.  https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=36606.25

If you go to the second page there are a number of links given to various sites that carry the square tips.

John,

Would they fit on a Timevalve stainless exhaust system?

They should. I just measured my Timevalve pipes outside diameter and they are 45 mm. The inside diameter of these chrome tips is the same… So it will be a tight fit, but a little heat or lubrication or both and you should be able to get them on.

Thanks for the link. Glad to see that I did remember that there was a quirk to the search.

Is the end of these, the non-rolled part that is, the same as the MB part, with the cut-out?

Even if there is no notch, the cost difference is eminently worth getting the Stoddard part.

I installed the Stoddard part over standard OEM exhaust pipes with no issues.  I will say the difference between the squared off and rounded tips is pretty darn subtle.  I got them from Pelican when they offered a 15% off sale.  I bought an extra set for back up.  High quality product.

Jon,

Based on what I read on the previous post regarding these tips and the pictures I saw online from the various sellers there are no cut outs. Perhaps others that have bought Porsche ones can chime in to verify this.

Thanks for the tips on getting them on. It seems they would be pretty tight!

I did a little measuring and checked out the various sellers and the Porsche ones are 160mm long vs Mercedes ones at 170mm. Both are 45mm diameters.

On my Timevalve stainless exhaust there is like a brace welded to the top of the 2 pipes after the muffler that I guess is there to keep the pipes together. The cutouts on my Mercedes ones are 30mm deep and clear that brace which leaves the tips about 20mm beyond my rear bumper. If I install the Porsche ones with no cutouts and 10mm shorter that would give me almost 40mm beyond the rear bumper.

Is that the correct length beyond the bumper or would it be better to do my own cutouts? Any tips on what to use to do the cutouts would be helpful as well.

Thanks!

I have a SS exhaust on my 280 SL, and there is a support piece that the cutouts at the back of the tips fit into. On my 250 SL, with a standard MB exhaust the support set up is different and the cutouts do not fit into them, they butt up against the support piece.

The tips I have are about 166 mm.

FYI.  The Stoddard part does not have a cutout.  Had no issue with their fit or how far they extend past the bumper.  I’ve only seen one w113 with the original OEM tip and these are virtually indistinguishable once installed.

OEM chrome tips should stick out 15mm from OEM muffler pipe ends.  This should then align the chrome tips with the tip of the rear bumper. Not sure of the SS Timevalve pipes. When I replaced my original OEM pipes with MB pipes, I measured the original tips to assure I replaced them correctly. At that time you could order from MB Classic Center the MB pipes for welding or piles for clamps. I would think the clamp (mine are welded) pipes could be some difference in where the pipes stop at rear bumper.

Were the tips of other models of the same vintage also originally square.  I have 109 that we bought from the dealer in Cleveland, and I don't remember the tips being square.

I believe they were square. I have seen other tips for sale with a slightly larger diameter, that would fit the other cars.
