Automatic bushing replacement question

Lever has gone floppy and noticed that bushing has perished and disconnected from transmission and the whole thing can pull out from below as pictured!

The bottom bushing can be replaced from below but I guess the top one has to be done from inside ?

I have seen previous posts on this and seems quite doable?

hi
inside the cabin,  pull up the carpeting around the gear shift.
remove 4 bolts
install new bushing on rod, re connect rod to shift assy
re install from inside cabin  (feed rod down along the trans)

secure 4 bolts, put car in "P"
go under car push trans selector to forward position, connect linkage

Thanks so much sorry I see most of it is done from the top and as you say slide it down from the inside. When I refit the bottom part of it, the transmission connection has to be as far forward as possible -ie as close to the front of the car is park?

yes   you need the rod as far forward as possible to make it easy to attached the rod to the transmission..

i put the gear selector in "P"  you can try a different selector position.

I ended up replacing the bushing on my sl this morning.   
the picture shows the entire assy removed from the car.

when re assembling make sure the "lip" on the bushings are facing the correct direction.   towards the shifiter or trans

     I'm finally getting around to doing this same repair on my 70 280SL but only the lower bushing, which disenegrated back in May.
Right now I have the car locked in 2nd.   After inserting the new bushing, you recommended moving the gear selector to Park to get the rod closer to the selector knob on the transmission. 

My question is how do I know what gear the transmisson selector plate is in, to match it to Park, Neutral, etc.  I remember seeing a photo/diagram on the forum a few months ago showing what position matches which gear, but I cannot find my way back to that post.

Appreciate any help.
