Spark Plug Wires
« on: October 04, 2024, 02:33:27 »
Hello.

1966 230SL.  While installing a 123 in this car (great results so far), I realized that I could tidy up the engine bay a bit by shortening several of my spark plug wires.  I have (what I would call) the old style with the metal shroud at the plug and the typical fitting for the coil.  Does anyone know whether these can be shortened, and if so how to do that?

Thanks,
Harry

I believe you simply remove the spark plug shroud, snip the wire, and reattach the shroud.  Others can confirm if I'm correct or crazy.

Post a couple pictures of your wires and we'll let you know if they're too long.  I don't recall people having this problem before.

Hi Rodd, and thanks for the help.  I'll look into it further based on your thoughts.  But the wires are just too long.  I'm not after a a highly "accurate" level car, just one that is a very nice and reliable driver.  Including the engine bay!

The wires are screwed into the shroud. Don't just snip the wires. There is a small screw inside the shroud, so just like unscrewing any ordinary screw, unscrew the wire and then figure out the amount needed to be cut, and screw the wire back in.
